Mumbai, Jun 15, 2007
Acer India has announced the launch of its Aspire 3680 series for the Indian Market.
With a Linux operating system, the Acer Aspire 3680 series will now be available at Rs. 19,999 (excluding carry case & taxes).
S Rajendran, GM (sales & marketing), Acer India said, "The Acer Aspire 3680 series is part of Acer's initiative of 'making mobile computing more affordable' and a response to the demand for low cost and efficient notebooks." He further added, "The Acer Aspire 3680 series has all the specifications required to improve productivity of people working on the move and encourages them to graduate to Notebooks from desktops."
The Acer Aspire 3680 series uses a Celeron M 430 (1.73 GHz) or above, for increased power and performance. With system memory of 256mb, a 14.1" wide screen and combo drive, the company claims that it is a complete notebook. This breakthrough price of INR 19,999 is being achieved via a special limited period offer of INR 2500/- as cash back offer on purchases till 25th June 07 or stocks last, whichever is earlier.
The Acer Aspire 3680 series is the lowest priced notebook from a major MNC vendor and is targeted at empowering the common man with complete computing technology at an affordable price.

I have a variant of this bought in America three weeks ago, on sale at "Best Buy" at $399(US).
Same machine, same "3680" tag, but mine came with 512megs, no camera and a Celeron 1.6. The 80gig hard disk appears to be a SATA drive and probably is the same over your way.
It's actually pretty respectable. Runs Ubuntu Linux just fine, including 3D effects even with 512megs. They saved a bit of money dropping the screen size to 14.1" instead of the normal 15.4" for a 1200x800 display, but...you know, it works quite well. The WiFi chipset is a top-of-the-line Atheros which works GREAT with Linux (aka "MadWiFi" driver set). Speakers are a bit pathetic but that's what the headphone jack is for.
I had 2gigs of memory laying around from something else that fit, and with that much RAM I was able to get Windows 2000 running as a Virtual Machine (Innotek VirtualBox) with VERY respectable performance in MS-Access despite the single-core CPU not having hardware virtualization extensions. So this thing ain't a toy. Physically it appears solid, it's been stable in Ubuntu, lid hinges seem OK, pressure on the laptop lid doesn't make the screen go funky...damn, it works :).
512megs RAM will be better though. The video card eats main (?shared?) memory and is adjustable to 128megs. |

A tip: in Linux, make sure xorg.conf knows to set video memory to 128megs if you have more than 256megs available total. The part that will suck on this Indian version is the 256megs; the Intel graphics are pretty good but they're "shared memory" and take away from the main pool. With 512megs minus the max 128 for video, Ubuntu Linux ran great (including 3D).
What else...for some reason the "i810" driver is faster than the newer "Intel" driver. |
