Service Issues Dominate Jamshedpur Yatra

Service-related issues took centerstage at the Yatra meet held at Jamshedpur recently, as partners complained of delay in services from all sides.
Devendra Bansal of Binary Microsystems, said, "Besides Samsung, only a few vendors have their service center in Jamshedpur and hence we face delays in service and replacement." According to Ravikant, channel manager of Digitech Systems and Services, HP's service has been "a bit of a concern for a while now".
As per some of the partners, the situation is such that some service centers demand money for driver installation (a software required to run the hardware), something that can be downloaded even from the internet.
"However, HP-Compaq still continues to be the most preferred brand, as it dominates the market in desktops as well as the laptop segment," Ravikant said.
Jamshedpur's status as the steel city of India has been a boon for the IT market in this city, which accounts for around 250-300 PC sales per month. The market is driven majorly by the Tata industries followed by the government and educational sectors.
"There are around 300-400 small-scale industries in Jamshedpur which cater to the needs of the Tata industries. Besides, we have minimum government interference as most of the things are privatized here," said Bansal.
Despite a growing IT market, the channel doesn't have an active representative body. Formed 4 years ago, the Jamshedpur IT Association (JITA) had its first general body elections this year. The association consists of around 55 members. However, according to Arun Kumar, proprietor Goldline India, the organization has done nothing substantial. "There aren't many people who are willing to take the initiative and those who do have their own ill-intentions," he added.
80 channel partners attended the event.
