ACi to Shift Manufacturing Base to India

By Bhavika Jhaveri
Mumbai, May 24, 2004

UK-based Allied Computers International (ACi) has decided to shift its manufacturing plant from London to India, with a view to cutting down its overhead expenses.
Hirji Patel, chairman, ACi Asia, said, "The primary reason for this move is to reduce our labour cost. The cost of hiring labour in India is merely 20 percent as compared to that in the UK.'

The company will be shifting its resources to India by the end of the current financial year. It is currently contemplating with the idea of opening a factory at either Pondicherry, Himachal Pradesh or Goa. Patel said, "We are aiming to build a unit which will manufacture 20,000 PCs a month, as compared to 2,000 units per month in London. This will also enable us to break the PC barrier and give enough capacity for future requirements."

The Rs 11.8-crore India company has a plant in Vasai (Thane District) where the assembling process takes place. Patel added, “The Vasai plant is a much smaller unit where we only customize and assemble notebooks. With the forecast of high volume sales, we needed to increase production."

In order to expand its capacity, the notebook company would invest Rs 6 crore to Rs 7 crore in the new facility. ACi also plans to go public or opt for a buyout option by the end of the next financial year.

Do you see other companies following ACi's move?

Beware! Beware! Beware! if you are thinking of buying ACI laptops think again. Buying an EMERALD C laptop from ACI asia headquater i.e in mumbai was a real nightmare for me. 1.You get a celeron centrino instead of pentium centrino as you approved a quote which says" intel pentium M 1.4GHz 512kb l2 cache" because "pentium centrino comes with 1 mb l2 cache only and you have to pay additional Rs 5000". 2.You pay for a combo drive in advance and assured of getting it in 3 days and you are kept waiting for 18 days . and when you finally reach their office they "adjust" it with another one taken out from a different colored laptop after waiting 5 long hours. 3.A 4 cell battery life - according to their business development executive- 3hours according to their officil website-2 hours when you realy use 1.30 hours . 4. Very unsupportive customer support . spares not available in market , even in their head office as they get their units assembled by Elitegroup systems taiwan and they completely rely on them. So better spend few more bucks and go for a reliable brand with better after sales support.

Sir, Recently I have been trying to get the 30K ACi laptop since about 2 months now, but the sales team is the least interested in selling. They promise to come for demos and have not turned up till now. They give reasons that ACi is planning to shift its selling to dealers. I have already purchased 2 ACi laptops in the past, but there is some serious problem with the sales. Please look into the matter and respond asap. I have called up several people in ACi sales but there is no response.

Mr.Hirji Patel,Chairman. We have no idea of shifting any company. Sir, you have taken a very good decision of shifting of your manufacturing plant from UK to India. Certainly you will be benefited by 60% to 80% in your profts. If you shift your plan to Hyderabad, it will be more better than any other state, because in Pondichery already your compititors are situated. Himachal Pradesh/Goa not so much good. Hyderabad has got very good skill labour is available, Govt. of AP is providing all sorts of facilities. Cybercity in Hyderabad is very very good place. If you want any help or informaton in establishing plant please contact me by e-mail. Thank you Sir.
