Acer Targets Govt & Education For Projectors

By ChannelTimes Staff
Mumbai, Jan 2, 2007

PC vendor Acer India plans to boost its projector sales in 2007 by aggressively pursuing the vast potential in the government and education sectors.

The company, which holds various government contracts like the DGS&D, NICSI and Maharashtra Mantralaya, has enrolled 12 Office Automation (OA) partners to cater only to the government sector. It also intends to leverage its large partner network in the desktop and notebook space to strengthen its presence for projector in the education sector.

Mukund, managing director, Acer India, said, "With just 30 percent of the projector market comprising DLP technology, our contribution has had a significant impact in not only growing the DLP projector market, but the projector market as a whole in 2006. All our projectors weigh less than 2.5 kg and we believe that having conquered the SVGA market, this allows us to also explore other categories."

Acer recently announced that they have been listed No.1 in the multimedia projectors market by Fisher Consulting for Q3 of 2006. The report also lists Acer as No. 1 in both the SVGA and micro portable segments. The report projects unit sales to grow by about 41 percent in 2007. With majority of the sales seen in the corporate, government and education sectors.

Commenting on its 2007 plans, S. Rajendran, general manager-sales & marketing, mobility and display products group, said, "Acer right now has a stronghold on the DLP SVGA and micro portable projector market. We have a winning product range in place, at great price points and one of the largest service networks in the country. We intend to use this success to branch out into the XGA category too as the shift to XGA is slowly gaining momentum and will be more significant in 2007. We are already bifurcating our partners, product-wise, and will soon have a dedicated network for both XGA and SVGA."

Acer has over 3,000 channel partners and 260 retail partners in over 108 cities and towns and a service network of over 175 Acer Service Providers in 175 cities and 65 Acer Customer Service Centers.
What do you think of Acer's new growth plans?

Acer has done things only becuase of Big Deals. But any way, it a good sign as other players are also getting thier pie of market share for Projectors. because of Acer, and thier marketting stategies have made other players to think more about thier Pricing. Congrats Acer.

Q3 numbers shown by fisher consulting are due to some one off deals. While one appreciates acer's efforts in winning a big project, dont miss out on looking at the normal runrate quantity, thats what determines true number 1, Epson & Sharp can be considered the true market leaders, sorry to say acer has long way to go

for your comments, you dnt seem to have the guts to reveal ur identity. Any body can make comments by shooting from the hip without revealing one self. Anyways just in case u do understand, it does not matter what someone was doing b4, Acer is an indirect co and does business via channels and hence whether its alankar or abraham lincoln, all will have to work acc to co framework, i guess thats something u may not understand.I sell acer and have never seen an internal conflict between direct vs indirect, there are and will be issues, but i doubt if this would ever be an issue.

what ever the report might say. Acer is growing. and we should accept it. But we fear that Acer should stick to its indirrect Mode only. But people like Alankar , Is always inclined to direct Mode. hope these are sorted out.

Acer is a 100% indirect company fully committed to the channel unlike a lot of others who follow a 'khichdi model'. Our partners can be rest assured that we will grow along with them only.

Its very stunning to see that Acer Projectors is No1, They are doing well in SVGA segments because of Price, and huge deals. But the test will be for them in the XGA category. Lets wait and watch.

How would you define 'slowly gaining momentum'? Since the general trend in the last 5 years have been to shift towards higher brightness, better resolution, lower power consumption would it not be correct to presume that SVGA category will soon be extinct. In general the portfolio of most manufacturer's presently has more XGA than SVGA specs. Also input devices are coming in with higher resolutions today. So why bifurcate on resolution. customer category wise would be a better idea.

I believe that IDC 2005 report doesn't mention ACER anywhere in the top 10 for all/DLP/LCD categories.
