Apple Begins Exchange Program on 1.8 Mn Batteries
By

Mumbai, Aug 29, 2006
Apple International, which has decided to recall 1.8 million batteries last week, has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge.
Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing Sony manufactured cells have strong possibilities of overheating under rare circumstances and pose fire hazards. These batteries were installed from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the notebook computers like the 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.
In India too the recall will happen through registration on Apple website, the pattern followed worldwide. The in-house Apple customer servicing team will be in charge of the replacement. However, due to logistical problems, in B & C category cities, the Apple authorized service providers will help in registering complaints and storing inventories, the company said.
Apple has about 37 authorized service providers in India including HCL Infinite, RSG Infotech, PCSS Solutions, among others. Complete details regarding the exchange program can be found at https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/.
When contacted, Apple Computer International stateded in an email reply, "We discovered that some Sony batteries in previous models of PowerPC-based iBooks and PowerBooks do not meet Apple's standards for safety and performance." It also clarified, "None of Apple's Intel-based notebooks are affected, only certain models of previous iBooks and PowerBooks. Our number one priority is to recall and replace the affected batteries free of charge."
The company further said that it does not anticipate this recall to have an financial impact on Apple and is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries. "Apple has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge. This program is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities."
When contacted, Taral Chauhan, business development manager for Apple at Neoteric, said, "This is a matter of concern in India too. However, we have not got any clarity from the principal about the inventory stocks, whether we should provide to our channel partners, or any correspondence regarding the same." Rupesh Pandey, managing director, Imagine, said, "The resellers or service partners are not involved in this at all. Apple has just instructed the partners to navigate through the website to enable our customers to do the same and answer their queries."
According to Apple, it may take about four to six weeks for the replacement batteries to arrive. Apple will send the replacement battery first and then one has to send Apple the recalled battery.
Apple's recalling announcement follows a similar announcement by Dell a fortnight back.
