Bluetooth-enabled Equipment to See Huge Demand

Bluetooth technology has emerged as an absolute necessity in today's IT environments, where short-range, wireless data transmission is required. Most of the security issues connected with the technology have been solved to a great extent.
Based on its growing demand, ABI Research, a market research firm, recently conducted a study and has published its report 'Bluetooth: The Global Outlook'. The report addressed several major applications and variations of Bluetooth, and discussed other wireless connectivity IC integration. It also includes extensive analysis of the equipment and semiconductor markets.
According to the report, close to 2.4 billion units of Bluetooth-enabled equipment are expected to ship worldwide in 2013. More than half of these will be cellular handsets; adding the accompanying headsets brings that figure to more than 75% of the total market. Notebook computers and portable music devices will run a distant second and third, although the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the latter is by far the greatest for any product class.
ABI finds Bluetooth is showing up everywhere. Apart from the above mentioned gadgets, in PDAs, desktop PCs, Human Interface Devices (e.g. keyboards), printers, automotive products, add-in cards and dongles, digital cameras, and medical products. And this ubiquity is opening up new opportunities.
Douglas McEuen, senior analyst of ABI Research, says, "Integration is a key trend in Bluetooth markets. Designers are saying 'Bluetooth is in everything, so what else can we add to the Bluetooth chip?' GPS is a popular candidate, as is FM radio."
Some forms of integration will add speed and range to the present technology, such as the current development of 'Bluetooth over 802.11.' The Bluetooth SIG is working with the WiMedia Alliance to create a technology codenamed 'Seattle,' which will also add UWB's high-speed capabilities to Bluetooth.
Although characterized by eccentric cycles of growth and contraction -- caused due to staggered 4-5 year generations of 3 leading game consoles/remote controls -- Gaming is another quite a big market for Bluetooth, finds ABI.
