Canon to Patch Up with Salem Resellers
By
Pearl Mistry
Mumbai, Mar 7, 2007
It's not a case of waking up from Rip Van Winkle slumber. Faced with a ban from resellers in Salem in Tamil Nadu for last three years, Canon India still claims that it is oblivious to the move
from the anguished channel community.
However, the vendor has asserted that it would soon resolve the stalemate.
"Salem IT Association had slapped the ban on sale of all products from the digital imaging company after raids were conducted by Canon in the town," said B Rajamanickam, president of the association.
He explained that the association resorted to such a drastic step as the raids were conducted against a "genuine" dealer for the company Ravi Kumar of G V Electronics.
"We were convinced that the action was taken with malafide intention. When we got to know that the company has falsely accused a member of our association, we thought that we should respond to this victimization and unanimously decided to ban Canon," he said.
Kumar alleged that the vendor's intention in conjunction with a Mumbai-based agency was only to coerce the dealers in the region to toe the company's lines.
Alok Bharadwaj, vice president, Canon India when contacted feigned ignorance about being blacklisted at Salem, a textile hub with around 9 lakh population.
He merely said all raids are conducted under the policy directives of Canon global headquarter and Canon India has nothing to say on this.
However, Bharadwaj said, "but taking the cue from you I will ensure that my team explains the company's standpoint to the traders".
The raids were conducted at Salem as part of the vendor's global policy of safeguarding their copyright interest. "Our stand is very clear and uniform for all cities across the country. Canon copyright protection is fundamental to the company's business. Canon Global conducts raids across countries like China, India, Indonesia, etc. However, Cannon India is not involved. Any dealer who sells grey market or counterfeit products runs the risk of facing the consequences. There is no way that Canon India can protect the interest of any such dealer," said Bharadwaj.
Kumar said though the case was later withdrawn, the six months that he had to spend in mental agony and in clarifying his stance could not be compensated.
Another reseller M. Nagendran, Insight Systems also asserts that the association had taken an appropriate stand. "It is not as if I am losing out on business by not selling Canon products," he added.
In February 2006, Canon had conducted similar raids at Bhavnagar in Gujarat and two resellers were arrested on the charge of dealing with duplicate cartridges.

Yes It is right on part of Canon to catch hold of such unscrupleous dealers who cheat the consumer as well as the company |

More raids should be done all over country to protect Canon Immage. Lot of resellers sell the duplicate cartridges which spoils the printer and also customer stand to loose wty on the product. |

The MNCs will continue raid the resellers godown to check spurious items. How much ban can the resellers put to check the strategy. Microsoft have conducted similar raids even in metros. The association should look that no person is booked with false allegation but should not restrain the companies to raids. |
