Canon to Upgrade Partners for DMS Business
By
Nirendra Dev
Mumbai, Mar 19, 2007
Encouraging partners to focus on the Document Management Contract Services (DMS), Canon will invest in DMS and elevate some of its existing partners with training to achieve trans-geography penetration.
"We are investing in software and a new set of software Image Ware will be launched soon. This will be one of the main focus areas for us in 2007 after having done well with holistic services and print management," said Som Gangopadhyay, marketing head, Business Image Solutions, Canon India.
"We have not mapped out yet who all among the partners will be taken in it. But by 2008 we will have top 50 of our 130 leading partners who can think of rolling the software out," he told Channel Times in an interview.
Till then, he said Canon will operate through the vendor's direct channel. Gangopadhyay's Business Image Solutions segment caters to corporate, commercial and government space chiefly.
Compliance issue getting more prominence in India has opened new avenues as the advantages offered by DMS are multiple enabling companies to excel in changing scenario with private-sector enterprises eyeing the DMS as the inevitable.
He said document management is highly emerging segment with organizations spending almost 5% to 15% on it and the challenge for the companies is "how to redeploy the existing devices".
However, the document management and distribution is still "out of the radar" of most CIOs and IT managers, he said adding it is in this context the partners' role will be important.
Stating that security is also emerging as a big issue at imaging level, he said "the simple looking printer also poses huge security threats as it is the weakest link in networking".
The document management industry is poised for unprecedented growth and partners will have a key role in undergoing a transformation, he said but hastened to add that the services of partners will not be enlisted just for the sake of it.
"We want our partners to thrive and do well in whichever area they are. But for dealing with hi-end products like DMS partners also ought to be prepared well with proper training and improving on the skills," Gangopadhyay said.
He said an extensive Canon GuruKul was conducted at national level in Delhi where sales persons from 50 of our top partners were provided with training.
"We will subsequently launch such training programs in four regions to address partners across all the regions. We also have Training the Trainer program under which the partners' representatives trained can pass on their knowledge to partners in smaller towns in their respective regions," he said.
He said several hi-end products on hardware have already been made available to partners in December 2006.
Taking a question on why partners repeatedly complain about warranty and post sales services issues against Canon products, he said, "That could be in hardware. In our software products we strongly believe in Total Guarantee. It's guarantee for life".
