Mumbai, Nov 14, 2007
The IT business in the state of West Bengal had come to a grinding halt after the state observed a "bandh" due to the ongoing violence in the rural area of Nandigram.
Partners across the state lamented that at least 2 to 3 bandhs had been observed in some parts of the state since October.
Expressing concern over the situation, Gitesh Tibrewal, proprietor of Logic Fusion and president of IT Dealers'Association of Siliguri, said, "The market was also closed for 2 days on account of Diwali, and then the bandh was called for which we have to switch our sales for the next 2 days. The market not showing up for 4 consecutive days has set to flounder our daily activities.
Though the violence is mostly affecting Nandigram and its outskirts, it has shown signs of discontent among partners in the entire state.
"Although the city of Jalpaiguri, situated at a distance of 700 kms from Kolkata, didn't witness any violence due to the bandh, yet everything has come to a standstill," said Abhijit Kundu propreitor of Bharti Computers, Jalpaiguri.
Sharing similar sentiments, partners from the Kolkata market bemoaned that the market was affected this Monday.
Bandhs afflict the activities of the IT market leading the channel fraternity to compensate subsequently. Somnath Shaw, proprietor of Apson International, said, "The market wasn't operating due to the bandh. So we had to slog the next day to meet out our monthly targets, as it upset the business activities."
However, partners further added that the ongoing festive season, commencing right from Durga Puja to Christmas, monitors a downfall in the sale of IT products.
"Generally, the market dips after Durga Puja and picks up after the month of December. As the market bestows lower revenue during this period, the bandh has only worsen the situation for the channel fraternity", said Mahesh Agarwal, partner of Dayglo.
After much din and commotions in the state, in anticipation, the channel fraternity rules out that this kind of situations adversely affects all the business sectors. However, at the same time they're all set to face the dilemma of it.
