Cisco Intros ASR 1000 Series Routers

By ChannelTimes Staff
International Desk, Mar 6, 2008

Cisco has announced the introduction of the Cisco ASR 1000 Series (Aggregation Services Routers), which is designed to help service providers and enterprise edge networks to simultaneously host an array of resource-intensive integrated data, voice and video business and consumer services.

The company also introduced the QuantumFlow Processor (QFP), a fully integrated and programmable networking chipset, consisting of of 40 cores on a single chip and can perform up to 160 simultaneous processes.

The ASR 100 series features software virtualization to enable "instant-on" provisioning and simultaneous use of a wide range of service functionality, including firewall, IP security virtual private networks (IPSec VPNs), deep-packet inspection (DPI) and Session Border Control (SBC).

The new QuantumFlow Processor allows the platform to be re-tasked to meet emerging requirements. The ASR 1000 Series also features IOS XE software, a virtualized IOS implementation optimized for compact routers at the edge to deliver in-service software upgrades and software redundancy.

"The Cisco ASR 1000 Series is expected to provide the functions essential for such IP NGNs in a flexible and scalable manner, with the high availability that we and our customers demand," said Shin Hashimoto, executive vice president of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation.

ASR 1000 combines necessary service features into a single router platform, resulting in a substantial increase in IP forwarding performance. It also simplifies network design because a single router can be used in different hardware deployments and provides different services based on software enablement.

"The Cisco ASR 1000 Series is positioned to blend a very positive TCO with flexibility and innovation to support not only our current requirements, but those that we are just beginning to envision. Scalability, security and reliability are 3 areas where we look to the Cisco ASR 1000 Series as a ground-breaking platform," said John Burns, vice president of network services for Wachovia.

The series will be generally available in April 2008 in 2-, 4- and 6-rack unit sizes, with pricing starting at US$35,000.
