Google Labs has rolled out a new Google SMS channel, a platform to send free group SMS. Currently in testing in India, the product will be available to the global audiences at later stage. The service supports messages in several languages including English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. The company, however, has not announced the official date of its commercial release.
As per a company communique, the platform will allow users to utilize maximum space for their messages with the availability of 160 characters to post. At present, the user can subscribe to maximum 30 channels, and can receive 10 messages a day. Moreover, the user can create individual channels, and publish content that other users can subscribe to after registering with valid mobile numbers. With this launch, the company expects non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporate and schools to create groups over SMS for communication.
