Coming Soon: RF Remote Control Standard

By ChannelTimes Staff
Mumbai, Jun 13, 2008

Four major consumer electronics companies -- Philips, Samsung Electronics, Sony Corporation, and Panasonic -- will together develop a standardized specification for radio-frequency-based remote controls for audiovisual consumer electronics devices.

Working with Freescale Semiconductors, OKI and Texas Instruments, they have formed a RF4CE (Radio-Frequency for Consumer Electronics) Consortium to create a new protocol, which will allow the creation of radio-frequency remote controls for richer communication, increased reliability, and flexible use.

Currently, several existing remote controls are using infrared technology to communicate commands to controlled devices and no radio-frequency remote control standard is available for audiovisual consumer electronic devices. Increased demand for advanced functionality, which cannot be supported by existing infrared technology, has led to the formation of the RF4CE Consortium.

The radio-frequency remote controls enable non line-of-sight operations while technology provides more advanced features -- based on bi-directional communications - like display feedback for an enhanced entertainment experience.

The new radio-frequency remote control standard will be based on IEEE 802.15.4. The RF4CE specification is due to be launched in the second half of 2008.
How much beneficial will it be for the community?
