D-Link Revamping Retail Strategy

To cash in on the growing retail boom in India, networking solution provider D-Link has forged alliances with retail chains to increase the number of its retail outlets in the metros and non-metros by the end of 2007.

The company has tied up with consumer durables and information technology (CDIT) retail chains like croma, hyper city, e-zone and pantaloons in the country.

According to Tushar Sighat, vice president, channel business-India and SAARC, D-Link India said, "Through retailing we are planning to capture the increasing number of walk-ins and home users at CE stores and shopping malls. Currently, we have four retail shops in Mumbai and Ahemdabad and moving ahead, we plan to increase the numbers in A-class cities."

He informed that the company would position products like routers, wireless access points, wireless cards and modems at these outlets adding that retail is not limited to CE and PC peripheral products even networking and wireless products can be positioned on the shelves.

D-Link is set to launch a slew of storage and wireless products and appointing partners for the same.

The vendor has region or city specific distribution model across India with more than 4000 resellers. The vendor has 17 service centers where partners can get service directly from D-Link.

"We have set up a call center to offer services to our partners and customers through a toll free number, viz., 1600222002, besides the support from our distributors and dealers. The company is also educating its channel partners on how to identify a genuine D-Link product," said Sighat.

It will be effective only with PC dealers in non-metro cities as customer contct only with the PC dealers only.

internet in 20 pc through broadband it is very simple, purchase broadband modem cum router and save broadband user id and password in it and then to 24 port switch and it gives u non stop internet connection to all the pc's.

Retailing is the fastest growing industry at the moment @ 30-35 % per annum. This would be a proactive move by D-Link to position networking products on the shelves of some big retail outlets. One will have to adopt wait and watch policy to see the impact of this move on sales of Dlink. I would say that irrespective of the sales grows or not, but there would be clear Brand Visibility for these products. On the other side, networking products are most targeted at commercial segment(in corporates),and most importantly these products needs to be educated to the customers, once they enquire about it.Therefore, If this move gets success, it will open door to multiple options for IT players in retailing.
