D-Link Unveils ADSL 2+ Router, GLB-502T, for Soho

By ChannelTimes Staff
Mumbai, Aug 19, 2006

D-Link, the networking solutions provider, recently launched its new ADSL 2+ Router, GLB-502T, designed to provide a simple and cost-effective ADSL internet connection for individual computers through either the Ethernet or USB ports, or to bridge your Ethernet LAN to the internet.

The GLB-502T combines high-speed ADSL technology and a robust router in one compact device. This product supports 8 PVCs and enables users to access data, voice and video simultaneously. The GLB-502T can achieve upstream data rates of 1Mbps and downstream data rates of 22 Mbps. It has in-built ADSL POTS splitter which separates voice and data at the customer premise. Thus, the ADSL line can be directly and seamlessly terminated on the unit.

For small office environments, the GLB-502T allows multiple users on the LAN to access the internet concurrently through a single internet account. This provides internet access to everyone in the office for the price of a single account. NAT improves network security in effect by hiding the private network behind one global IP address. NAT address mapping can also be used to link two IP domains via a LAN-to-LAN connection.

The static routing feature is used to define a specific route that will always be used for data traffic from your LAN to a specific destination, either within the same LAN (for example, to another router or a server) or outside your network (to a ISP defined default gateway for instance).

It provides a secure web-based management interface with administrative and restricted access, to remotely configure and monitor the device. The touter's management software may also be remotely accessed by telnet.

The router is built in POTS splitter, easy to configure and GLB-502T is available in the market at an approximate street price of Rs 1,600 (plus taxes).
What is the potential for the GLB-502T router?

I too bought a dlink GLB-502T router in April 2008. Frankly, it is a really bad model. I had a lot of problems getting connected. Finally, i connected, but connection is not stable. Dlink blamed BSNL. I got BSNL guys to check the phoneline. They did and phoneline was fine. They tried with their bsnl modem, everything was fine. Obviously, prob is with my Dlink modem. I found, if I use it with USB connection, the system hangs after 15 min or so. Disconnect the USB router cable, and the system comes back to normal from hung state immediately. Some prob with USB port or driver maybe. Dlink tech support have no clue. They can only repeat like parrots. They will tell you to take the router to the service center to flash. Why should i buy a new modem, if it has to be flashed within a week of purchase? Dlink should recall their old routers from the market or at least print the date of manufacture on the box.

I bought the GLB-502T router for my BSNL Broadband and I find this router is utter rubbish. It developed trouble within 3 days of purchase. First it was the ADSL connection which was not stablising - the ADSL light would flash and then go off, it was never on permanently. My vendor replaced the faulty router. Now its the LAN line that giving problems. Frequently the "Local Area Connection" is getting disconected along with the ADSL. And no, its not a problem with the LAN card - I have a second Huawei modem that I used to test it out. And finally, I can't connect to broadband over a BRIDGE setting, I have to use the PPPoE settings which I don't want to. I keep getting the message "Remote computer did not respond..." or "Connecting over WAN Miniport..." but then nothing happens but in PPPoE mode things are working fine. Ergo, a problem with the router firmware. Lastly, this unit generates a lot of heat - may be that's the root cause of these problems.

Dear Sandeep, I'm not denying the fact that you may be having a problem, but I feel it must be an isolated case. Our experience with this model is very good, but what we find is that many times there are site problems. The ADSL blinking what u say, is a line fault which is very much a problem in BSNL networks. Also there is a problem of not getting PPoE link, again attributed towards problems in the exchange. We have not faced any problems both in bridge mode as well as PPoE mode. There were some hiccups earlier, which were sorted out immediately by DLInk officials and same was conveyed to channels by our DLink Disty. Basically I feel sorting out these problems should be a joint effort between the channel, Dlink Disty and Dlink company.Beleive it or not, here we have customers asking for Dlink router by name and model number, bcos they are aware they are getting better support and warranty as compared to the ones supplied by Bsnl.

I had the same problem. I tried all sorts of solutions. Finally i changed the OS to 2000 pro afetr formattting the disk. Now the glb 502T is working fine. No problem of ADSL light going off.

Sandeep, GLB502T required very stable power & ADSL connection, hence try to use it with an UPS or any power stabilizer. This router fails even with small power fluctuation, doesnot even work with even 200 V AC, :(,

I bought the GLB-502T router for my BSNL Broadband and I find this router is utter rubbish and D Link Company should be sued and taken to task by lodging complain with Cunsumer Forum. The TOLL free 1800-222-002 as per MTNL does not work. The other # 28447600 does not exist. The ADSL2+Router worked fine for few months now has developed. My vendor says that it will take minimum 20 days for repairs or replacement. The Router hangs in both LAN as well as USB conncection. I have to frequently power off wait for few sec and then power on again it is so frustrating. The LAN line doesn't gets recognised that giving Frequently the "Local Area Connection" is getting disconected along with the ADSL. The LAN card is not a problem as I am tested using both my PC as well as Laptop. The problem I believe lies in the firmware also this unit generates a lot of heat - may be that's the root cause of these problems. LINKSYS is any time better than a cheap stupp like DLINK

D-Link GLB 502T ADSL Modem : New Modem ( S/L no. 06E172009809) is also having the same problem. We have configured from home page of the modem and after giving commend to Save All from Tool menu..Modem home page/ADSL/PPPoE leds all disappeared and was unable to connect Home page. Infact, I was unable to restore default configuration by hardwere reset. I have followed exactly the same instruction of User manual. service center told us Firmwere corrupted. They re-installed the firmwere. But how to address the basic problem? Why it will get corrupted?

Hello! What operating system do you use? But when I installed the driver supplied for this GLB 502T ADSL 2+ router, I got the message that this driver has not passed the windows logo certificate and so if I instal this software I might have problem either immediately or later. But still I installed it anyway. And yes, now when I use this modem my computer reboots automatically within 5 minutes of use. So every 5 minutes or so, my computer reboots automatically. Can you tell me about my problem? Are you using the PPPoE connection or the bridge connection? I am using the PPPoE connection because the bridge connection is not working now. What TCP IP setting you gave? And what VCI value? When I was using UTSTAR modem my Internet connection was very fast upto 540 KBPS I got sometimes but using this modem I hardly get more than 15 KBPS. So, please let me know if you have found any problem. Thanks. Babul

I bought the GLB-502T ADSL2+ router for my BSNL Broadband and I find this router is utter rubbish. It developed trouble fromthe very 1st days of purchase. Lastly, this unit generates a lot of heat - may be that's the root cause of these problems?as like as sandeeps.so i copy all this.thanks sandeep.

Joy, Welcome to the world of woes for D-Link 502T. The problem is with this modem. Also 3 simultaneous error 691 halts the modem and you have to wait for sometime before connecting. The only way around is after configuring the modem in bridge mode, Do not save the settings. As BSNL is not being able to provide adequate modems the only alternative is this one or ADSL from ASUS.

Hi, I've purchased this modem from the market about 6 months back for mtnl triband. Now from 15th august MTNL has introduced iptv facility through triband. Now I want to take this facility. but can I use this modem for this facility? As the modem is having only one usb and one lan port. Also suggest how should i connect it for more than 2 PC's in my office.

IF you use the lan connection, you have to setup the network related properties in the TCP/IP properties in Network connections of your PC.

there are two types of connection we have used with GLB-502T. 1. Bridge Mode, 2. PPPoE Mode Bridge for Single user and PPPoE for Multi user first u must set ur lan adapter with DHCP IP (easy) and NOT TO STATIC IP. The default ip adrss for GLB502 192.168.1.1. u check with ur lan adapter status that ur pc is 192.168.1.x and the gateway is 192.168.1.1 (GLB-502t).then go to the browser 192.168.1.1 and configured ur choice (bridge or PPPoE).VPI-0 VCI-35. for multiuser connect the router with a swicth . s/w ver 3.7.0B.1 or above is needed for PPPoE connection for ur router. stay connected

After connecting router properly, open; IE type 192.168.1.1; enter user/pass as 'admin'. On setup page create new connection. Select type as 'PPPOE" in the drop down box. Enter a name for connection eg 'DataOne'. Set Sharing as 'Disabled' Set VCI, VPI as 0, 35. Or select AUTO. Type your user name and password as provided by BSNL Click 'Apply' then goto Tools>System commands>click 'SaveAll'>Click 'Reboot' After rebooting, Now you are connected.

I am using Dlink's GLB-502T router. I think this is one of the advanced routers available in the market for this down to earth price. once it is configured correctly it works like a charm.

This is the worst modem in the world. It does not let me connect to ftp, it does not let me sign into msn. And I can not send large emails. I switched back to my old GLB 502T (without the 2+) and everything works like a charm.

I have been having problems with GLB-502T since i bought it. Alas i got to know after I bought it. The modem is complete crap. Dont ever swich on the light in the room when connected, cause the modem will at 100% of the times reset the connection and if you are downloading hevy files, dont ever try to touch the swtich panels. All my friends are having the same problem. Go for any other model but not this one..

GLB 502T router can be configured as instructed in their manual. MOST IMPORTANT TELEPNONE LINE SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY DISTURBANCE. Router's FIRMWARE NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED & IT HAS OVERHEATING Problem, due, which it gets, disconnected... blow air through the cooling ports and it will again reconnect. As in deeps blog, keep the router upside down or inclined to keep its heated airflow upward for sufficient cooling. D-Link should come out with the solution. Is their R&D being done at customer cost?

I am an user of GLB-502T. I am not sure whether I made the right decison of buying d link rather than going for renting modem from MTNL. I had sent my modem for repair and I have got it back after 12 days even after daily followup. The modem used to hang after 30 minutes of use and 3 weeks back PPPoE went blank. it took one week for MTNL to confirm that their connection is OK. Now as the warranty period is going to lapse, I am not sure what future cost is going to come my way.
