Delhi VAR Evolves Training Capsule for Linux Usage

By Ramya Nair
Mumbai, Sep 21, 2007

Amidst the growing opportunities for deeper penetration of open source in the country, Delhi-based Linux VAR Indserve Infotech has evolved special hands-on-training for resellers and a tailor-made program for freshers to help them become employable.

"We train them on the general usage of Linux, on fault finding, and for fixing problems on it from an average desktop user's perspective. To the partners who will resell our services, we'll also be providing special training with hands-on-experience to IT freshers to help them become employable," Sudhir Gandotra, CEO and director of Indserve Infotech told ChannelTimes in an e-mail interview.

He said Linux is the 'perfect match' for India's requirement and hastened to add that having developed the products and services, the challenge now is to take it to growing number of users and growing the incoming revenue.

"In India, 60% of IT pass-outs don't get jobs. Out of these, only 10% are involved in developing software," he said, emphasizing that this makes a well-charted training program all the more important.

Gandotra added that besides training, building innovative products in terms of technology, as well as investments, and taking the products and services to the increasing number of users is also an obvious challenge.

In a price-sensitive market like India, Linux is affordable and meets the price-sensitivities, he said adding, "We find Linux to be the perfect match for India's requirements and thereby presume that Indian government can save Rs. 2,500 crore every year by using Linux".

Stating that since it started using the Linux platform in 1994, the company has witnessed huge growth. It's now planning to emerge as a global Linux company with a turnover of Rs. 3000 crore in next 5 years.

"We're proud of the support of our logistical partner - Champion Computers and national distributor Pacific Infotech - and we already have our products available through channel resellers in Delhi and various other parts of the country," he said, adding that the company also has reseller partners in Mauritius and small presence in US and UK.
What do you think of Linux as an operating system?

Open source products can easily be a permanent revenue source, whether on Windows or Linux platform. Either OS and programs native to each, can be run from within the other without any license violation. With FLOSS products, you are completely legal. The license says that it is 100% legal to share FLOSS. Plus you can customize it as per customer's needs. You only need to train yourself a bit. Or hire or contract someone. Support is the chief revenue source, not license fees. (Personally, I work on desktop applications, web sites, web apps and intranet solutions.)

An afforadable operating system and softwares are the need of time, specilly for India. A common man can think of buying a system, but basic softwares are OUT OF REACH to common man and small businessmen and SMEs. LINUX seems to be definately providing better option and government agencies, Bureacrats and Big corporate house should promote LINUX to make it ACCEPTABLE system by all.

Perhaps you should get in touch with the company directly at 011-26014670, 71 & 72 and discuss with them to organise this in your area. Looking at the way they have done it in Punjab, surely they will work with you.

We have been using OpenLX and Kalculate for over two years. It was a breeze for us to get to begin using computers with these softwares. We are happily free of viruses and we have never had a crash needing any support. We happily suggest all others to use these softwares.

what is the product /service that you have developed ? We have dealings with both your logistical partners and am surprised that we have never heard about your offerings through them yet. The article also does not offer a clue about your products // services at all. Atleast It should forward the reader to your home page for more information. It sounds like you have released some linux distribution and are offering training to resellers to promote the same. I as a VAR am keen to learn and promote the same too. Kindly provide more info
