Dell has announced an approximate 11 percent price cut on select configurations of its servers, desktops, workstations and notebooks, effective from 14th January.
"This announcement is to focus on the speed with which Dell can deliver the new reductions afforded by the new duty reliefs," said a Dell official.

With the Union Government's recent announcement of reduction in custom duties on computer products, Dell has decided to pass on the savings to customers in the subcontinent.

"For our Indian customers, there has never been a better time to buy from Dell," said Dinesh Pai, general manager for Dell India. "Since the announcement of the new tax rates, we have been able to pass these saving along immediately to our customers. Other vendors may have to work through accumulated inventory taxed under the old regulations. Dell is able to deliver these savings today.'

According to Dell, the company is able to pass on the benefits to its customers so fast because of Dell's build-to-order, direct model. Dell only builds a system once it is ordered and sells directly to customers. With no middleman, there is no inventory or backlog to sell through before offering the savings delivered by the new tax cuts.

The price reductions are available only to customers who are billed in Indian rupees. Dell is looking at possibilities of offering these reductions on several of its products.

Exact percentages will vary by product and configuration, the official revealed. For example, a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a 2.66-Ghz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 256 MB of memory and an 80 GB hard drive, that had a list price of Rs 65,554 before the duties changed, can now be purchased directly from Dell for Rs 58,067.

Similarly, newly launched Dell Inspiron 600m 1400GT notebook, based on Intel Centrino Mobile Technology, will now be available at Rs 64,900.
