ECB Disk Storage Sales Rise in 3Q 2007

By ChannelTimes Staff
International Desk, Dec 28, 2007

Sale of external controller-based (ECB) disk storage has noticeably increased in India. According to a recent survey report by Gartner, while worldwide ECB disk storage revenue totaled $3.9 billion in the third quarter of 2007, revenue generated for the product in India totaled $59.4 million.

In terms of percentage growth over the same period in 2006, the Indian subcontinent shows a record 76.3 per cent rise as against the worldwide picture of 3.4 per cent increase.

Among the major players who ruled the market this year were: EMC, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi/HDS, Dell, Network Appliance and Sun Microsystems (arranged in terms of descending order of revenue generated in 3Q07). Finishing the quarter at 25.8 per cent market share, EMC bagged a revenue of US $996.1 million, excluding OEM revenue from Dell and Fujitsu Siemens. IBM was in second position with 14.6 per cent of the market (revenue generated US$ 564.8 million) followed by Hewlett-Packard with 12.6 per cent (US$ 484.7 million).

The Asia/Pacific region excluding Japan (APEJ) has increased its revenue by 22.7 per cent year-over-year. The growth in the region is widely distributed amongst several countries including India, Australia, Taiwan, and China. "Distributed growth is a positive indication of vendors' commitment in the region," said Aman Munglani, principal analyst for Gartner's storage group. "While each country is unique, vendors are better positioned to leverage existing relationships," he added.

Gartner finds, in India, EMC regained its leadership position with a market share of 30 per cent with all product lines showing growth over the previous quarter. For ECB disk storage, in 3Q07, EMC revenue excluding OEM revenue from Dell and Fujitsu Siemens was US$18.1 million, with a market share of 30.4 per cent. IBM and HP generated US$12.9 and US$9.4 million with respective market shares of 21.8 and 15.8 per cent. EMC s more than 100 per cent year-over-year revenue growth was primarily driven by the DMX series at the high-end. IBM grew close to 90 per cent on a year on year basis.

Gartner's ECB disk storage report reflects hardware-only revenue, as well as hardware revenue associated with financial leases and managed services. Optional storage software revenue and storage area network infrastructure components have been excluded from the report.
