Eee PC's Success to Repeat with Eee Box: Asustek
By

Mumbai, Oct 16, 2008 1701 hrs IST
Taiwanese component and PC manufacturer, Asustek has launched Eee Box in India, becoming the second vendor to introduce nettop in this market after MSI (Wind). Measuring only 1L in size, the Eee Box is claimed to be less power consuming, portable and best suited for all first-time users to even the nth-time users.
"Eee Box is our first initiative in the desktop category. We believe it will repeat the success story of Eee PC. Being an early entrant in this market, we expect a good business of around 15,000 units in the first quarter, and would hope to double the target with coming quarters that will largely come through channels," said Stanley Wu, Product Manager, Notebook and Eee PC, Asus.
A report from Asustek mentioned that out of the 10,000 units of Eee PC that were sold in Q1 2008, about 70% of the sales had come from resellers. Stanley added,"We are hopeful to get similar share of business even for the Eee Box. We will start channel programmes and organize road shows in major cities, with the launch of Eee Box in the channels."
The product will be immediately available at Croma, and will get into the channels in a month time. Rashi Peripherals, Ingram Micro and Netplace will be its national distributors.
Channels need to identify the usage of their customers to improve the sell of Eee Box, as the new product is different from a traditional desktop. The basic function of Eee Box is content consumption, where users can play, view and listen to files, while a traditional desktop is for more complex computing environments, where users need to create and edit the content.
Priced at Rs 16, 490 (exclusive of taxes), the Eee Box uses the Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz) processor, and features, Windows XP, 1 GB DDR2 SO-DIMM, 80 GB HDD, 802.11b/g/n, two ports, card reader, keyboard and mouse. It can be mounted on a monitor or on a television. It is claimed to consume about 20W, which is 90% lesser than a traditional PC desktop consuming around 200W.
Currently, Asustek is working on introducing some offers for the end-users like bundling their entry-level monitors with their Eee Box. The company is also in talks with the telecom companies to provide wireless data cards at special rates.
The new product is targeted toward the corporate, government and SMBs. However, the vendor is also expecting positive response from the home segment. According to Vinay Shetty, Business Development Manager-AOOP, Asustek, "Eee Box is a very adaptable product, which will find demand in almost all segments. Having said that, corporate and SMBs are expected to be the major demand drivers."
