Fake Processors Worry Intel Dealers

By Arjun Nair
Jun 28, 2002

After the influx of re-marked Pentium 3 processors last
year it is the entry of re-marked Pentium 4 processors that is worrying Genuine Intel Dealers in India.

These re-marked processors are actually processors whose speeds are stated
higher than they actually are. They are Intel Processors but not with the
original speed markings on them.

Sathya Prasad, MD of Vanpac said, "It is a big racket involving taking the
original processor and re-marking the actual speed of the processor. It is
not easy to spot these re-marked processors because the re-marking is done
very professionally."

This means that a re-marked Pentium 4 1.8GHz may well actually be a lower
speed model like a Pentium 1.4 GHz but because it sold at the price point of
a 1.8 GHz, it will net the dealer an additional profit of upto Rs. 2,000 or even more.

Sunil Kumar, MD of Lampo Computers adds, "This is not just limited to the
Pentium 4 but also models of the Celeron. While the problem isn't all that
grave in India the prospect of being undercut by unscrupulous dealers is
worrying for Intel as well as its dealers."

To its end, Intel has already issued an advisory to its dealers alerting
them of this issue and the steps to take to check the genuineness of its
processors.

Intel has already made available a software tool that will
correctly report the actual speed that a processor was marked for thus
providing dealers and customers a means of practically identifying a
re-marked processor.

Of course, there is nothing to stop a dealer from consciously choosing a
re-marked processor over an original one if he desires to. After all, a profit of Rs 2,000 on a single processor is nothing to be sneezed at.

What impact will this have on the Indian marketplace?

Intel runs like a big surgical mafia co and has established the fact that the Org takes money from the resellers (read buying at a higher price) and giving them back their own money. What fools Intel resellers are!!! This way or that - grey or fake - Intel makes a lot of money at our expenses

I have a couple of things to say on this: 1) Intel will never give an ad stating that there are overclocked processors because... a) It will shake the end-user confidence. b) It will have a long term impact on their image for openly admitting that the company does not, or does not want to curb this menace due to whatever reasons. I believe that Intel does, however, have the technology to make the CPUs tamper-proof by simply introducing a fuse circuitary that will short the CPU when overclocked. 2) Genuine Intel Dealers is a tag earned by anyone who sells boxed intel products. The genuinity of a dealer or the product has nothing to do with it. Say for example, a dealer is supposed to sell 20 pcs of boxed Intel processors per quarter; the dealer will sell 20 of them buying from the distributor the genuine products. But for the rest of the sales he makes, if he sells the other - overclocked - non-genuine variety, he still retains a tag of "Genuine Intel Dealer". And frankly, is anyone a thief or a crook, unless proven so! How can Intel take any action against those not proven guilty? 3) For the sake of correctness, I must however say, that most people are not even aware that Intel has a software that is available, for FREE from the Intel website. Go check that out.

INTEL INSIDE....IDIOT OUTSIDE ....the end-user...who else?, because the unscrupulous re-furbishers makes money by procuring dirt cheap CPUs that are out-dated / rejected or piled-up at Intels or some MNCs back-door junk-yard. Then re-furbish it & sells it at current prices. Intel has already made profit by selling it originally to some MNC, or maybe they themselves auction their Not-so-Hot CPUs once in a while. Now the local GIDs knowingly or un-knowingly pass it on,...if they get good margins they thank their stars, & have no guilt feeling because ultimately they are selling genuine INTEL, even if it is re-marked or over-clocked ! I see good prospects for AMD.

Intel should monitor strictly to avoid this fake processors availability , ordinary dealer or a customer cant identify the weather its fake or original. Buyers deffinetly go to the sellers who are selly to the less price , they dont say that we are selling fake . So Intel is responcebility to this .

All GIDs are not involved. Secondly Checking software Must be given free of Cost to check the Genuine Processor and its speed. Thirdly Protect Our Country from being Treated as a Dumping Ground for technology, this can have a Very Major Impact on our Growth and Economy, All Hardware Guys dont you want us to be a World Leader and Perhaps Transfer TEchnology to the World rather than buying from the World.

Intel should provide & circulate freely self test software which reports the speed and other characteristics of its processors. Once this is freely available, chances of anybody remarking / tinkering with external markings will reduce.

Intel should make this software tool available on the net so that each and every reseller can avail of this and check weather which GID is selling the remarked processor just for the sake of Rs. 2000/-. This will reduce the practice of GIDs who sell remarked processors.

The problem can only be solved by Intel. They incorporate a hologram on the surface of the chip with such a design that cannot be copied then there will be no problems at all. Thanks. Sun Systems

REAMRKING HAS ADVERELY AFFECTED GENUINE DEALERS AS UNCRUPLOUS DEALERS WHO SELL REMARKED CPU HAVE A BIG PRICE ADVANTAGE OVER GENUINE DEALER AND THEY USE IT TO UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. ITS NOTHING BUT CHEATING WITH CUSTOMERS WHO PAYS FOR HIGHER SPEEDS BUT ACTUALLY GET LOWER.ITS MORAL DUTY OF INTEL TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR CUSTOMER GET WHAT THEY ARE PAID FOR AND INTEL IS CAPABLE ENOUGH TO DO SO

Remarking is a legal issue which should not be ignored. But if overclocking works fine then customers can do it themselves and save some money. check out tomshardware.com for overclocking tips! Why pay Intel more money for more speed?!

Why worry about Intel processors, remarked or otherwise. Simply buy AMD! They are as good as Intel processors, and since they are not as big and popular a brand, no one wants to remark them.

One feels cheated only when one comes to know that he is cheated; and the fear instinct that we all have, will make the individual buyer raise his eyebrows at one and all Intel CPus that he plans to buy; the poor "Genuine iNTEL Dealer" is sure to feel terribly annoyed because of this; re-marking is nothing but FORGERY and any person found to be directly or indirectly dealing in FORGED INTEL CPUs should be dealt very severely as per the tenets of the law.

Intel should come out with some hologram markings so that fakes can be easily detected. This will effect the resellers the most since he has to face endusers.

This is a very simple problem that can be solved by Intel. They can given advertisements in the media saying that over cloacked processors can be detected using INtel software for finding the same. If this happens, every assembler will be afraid to sell the same. However Intel will not do this because of 2 reasons. a) Processor "over cloacked or not" are genuine Intel ones - on the sale of which Intel has made a profit b) when Intel announces a new processor followed by a price drop, what will they do with their existing old stock?? sell in bulk to Taiwan who in turn over cloack the same and sell all over the world.

Can Intel not stop the Dealers from selling these spurious CPUs for fear of getting a BAD name? With their resources they can wage a financial war against the socalled Importers by confiscating the material available freely. Even catching one or two of them should set an example. Or is it that they themselves are ofloading their CPUs fully aware of the consequences.
