Committed to providing high-value motherboards, Gigabyte has recently launched its P45-based motherboards in India. In a tete-a-tete, Rajan Sharma, general manager - MB and VGA BU, Gigabyte (India), is explaining the technical excellences of its P45-based motherboards to P. K. Chatterjee. Excerpts...
What makes Gigabyte claim that its P45-based motherboards are the most feature-rich motherboards?
Our P45 series motherboards (MBs) have revolutionary energy saving design - with Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) Advanced featuring hardware based Dynamic 6-Gear switching.
The MBs support 45nm DES with FSB 1600 MHz. They have the advanced power phase design with virtual 12 power phases to provide highly efficient operation for 45nm CPU. The Dual channel DDR2 1200 in them provides remarkable system performance. The embedded 2 power phases for NB chipset and memory power show excel at power efficiency. Two PCI-E 2.0 x16 graphic interfaces along with two PCI-E x4 and CrossFireX in the MBs support for ultimate graphics performance.
Also, the built-in TPM chip with 2048 bits encryption allows it to provide the highest level digital data protection. Its Smart Backup provides data backup solution with 4 serial ATA device attachments from 2 hardware RAID chips. It is OS independent i.e. works with both Windows and Linux.
Moreover, there are Diagnostic LEDs and ACPI LEDs on board to display system and power status. The MBs offer 4 Gigabit Ethernet LAN with Teaming functionality. They support Dolby Home Theater audio to create a stunning surround sound listening experience. The Quad BIOS solution in them gives a multiple security to the system. The Power/reset/Clr CMOS onboard button provides for easy operation on the workbench. The Hardware Over-voltage Control IC in each board provides more voltage control options on CPU, North bridge and memory. Also, they provide Blu-ray playback outputs supported by high quality 106dB SNR ALC889A HD audio.
How does it support overclocking say in gaming environment?
With memory tweaking feature, this series is highly appreciated by over-clockers. Extreme cooling is the most desired feature for this series. The enthusiastic feedbacks can be gauged form www.overclockers.com.
What is Gigabyte's Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) technology?
Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver is a revolutionary technology that delivers unparalleled power savings with the simple click of a button. Featuring an advanced proprietary hardware and software design, Gigabyte DES is able to provide exceptional power savings of up to 70%, and up to 20% improved power efficiency without sacrificing computing performance.
How Does Gigabyte's DES work?
The unique multi-gear power phase design of Gigabyte's DES allows for the most efficient switching of power phases - depending on CPU workload. When the CPU workload is light or it's idle, the DES downshifts gears, and only allows the minimum required power phases needed to accomplish the task to operate. By turning off the power phases that are not needed, Gigabyte's DES is able to dramatically save power that would normally have been wasted. As soon as the workload increases, DES recognizes that more power is needed, and is able to shift into higher gear - turning on power phases as they are needed.
Unlike some power saving designs that offer only 2 gears, Gigabyte's DES features multiple gears, allowing the CPU to maintain optimum power efficiency from light all the way to heavy loading. In a 2-gear-only design, each gear needs to operate longer at less than optimum efficiency, causing gaps in power efficiency. With the ability to switch on and off gears before they start to loose efficiency, Gigabyte's DES is able to provide up to 20% improved power efficiency.
The new Gigabyte's DES Advanced allows users to take advantage of energy saving with or without the use the DES Utility, for always-on, hardware based power savings. Gigabyte has also retooled DES to allow overclockers to experience the benefits of multi-gear power phase switching while overclocking, providing ultra stable, ultra smooth overclocking performance.
What are its multiple advantages?
The advantages for DES MB are - 1) Save money; i.e. lower the power consumption, lesser is the electricity bill, 2) Extend MB life; i.e. lower the power consumption, lesser is the temperature on your MB - making your MB more stable and durable.
Just to give an example of energy and money saving per year with Gigabyte's DES motherboard (DES ON vs DES OFF), assuming electricity cost is around INR 5 per KWH -
For idle loading - energy saved per year is 45 KWH, i.e. a saving of INR 225.
For Maximum loading - energy saved per year is 263 KWH, i.e. a saving of INR 1,315.
Thus, the average saving (with (67% idle loading, 33% Max loading) is INR 587.7.
