Gigabyte's P45-based motherboard: An insight

By P. K. Chatterjee
Mumbai, Aug 30, 2008 1140 hrs IST

Committed to providing high-value motherboards, Gigabyte has recently launched its P45-based motherboards in India. In a tete-a-tete, Rajan Sharma, general manager - MB and VGA BU, Gigabyte (India), is explaining the technical excellences of its P45-based motherboards to P. K. Chatterjee. Excerpts...

What's the function of the built-in TPM module?

In today's computing environment, security threats such as viruses, worms, trojan attacks, malicious hacking and data/identity theft, etc. are not only happening more frequently, but the cost to victims of such attacks are also on the rise. While software solutions are able to protect your data to a certain degree, a higher level of security measures is needed to ensure you do not become the next victim. That is where a hardware-based solution such as TPM can help. TPMs are hardware-based security microcontrollers that store keys, passwords and digital certificates and protect these data from external software attacks and physical theft.

Recognizing the need to protect users against today's computing security threats, Gigabyte is the first motherboard maker to equip with an onboard TPM Module from Infineon with 2048 bit encryption key. But, we haven't stopped there. We have paired our TPM module with a security software interface, called Gigabyte Ultra TPM, providing the industry's highest level of data security through a hardware plus software design.

What are the key features of Gigabyte Ultra TPM?

  • Security, manageability and flexibility that surpass software-based encryption.

  • Portable User Key and password that can be stored on USB.

  • Quick and effortless protection of data, plug in USB key to access data, or remove to safeguard.

  • Keeps your data secure when you are away from your computer.

  • Optional backup of key stored in BIOS in case of misplaced key.

  • What is the significance of Gigabyte's Smart Backup system?

Today we are in the digital age, where most personal data is stored digitally. While digital storage offers several tangible benefits such as portability, ease of storage, etc., keeping this data safe is more important than ever. If the majority of your important information is stored on a hard drive, what happens if that hard drive becomes damaged?

That is why Gigabyte has developed Gigabyte Smart Backup, the world's first Plug & Play Dual hardware RAID solution. It allows users to connect up to 4 Serial ATA devices for effortless RAID data protection. Dual onboard RAID controller chips automatically configure RAID setup without the need for drivers or other user intervention, making it easier than ever for users to enjoy enhanced data transfer performance, low CPU utilization, real-time backup on-the-fly and protection against HDD failure.

What's the advantage of having Dual BIOS?

DualBIOS is a Gigabyte patented technology that automatically recovers BIOS data, when the main BIOS has crashed or failed. Featuring 2 physical BIOS ROMs integrated onboard, Gigabyte DualBIOS allows quick and seamless recovery from BIOS damage or failure due to viruses or improper BIOS updating.

What is the speciality of Gigabyte Teaming function?

It enables 2 single connections to act as 1 single connection for twice the bandwidth, improving overall throughput with lower CPU utilization. It also prevents network downtime by transferring the workload from a failed port to a working port.

What is the significance of 2-Phase power for the North Bridge and memory? How does it improve overclockability?

Gigabyte P45 motherboards are equipped with 2-Phase power for the North Bridge and memory, allowing users to reach higher memory frequencies and enjoy better performance. Compared with only one phase solutions, this ensures longer power component lifespan and higher overclockability due to cooler working temperatures and better efficiency.

What are its onboard provisions for hardware troubleshooting?

There are 7 onboard LEDs controlled by the system BIOS. They indicate if a malfunction is occurring, allowing users to directly see where the problem is occurring, so they can quickly take action.

What are the tuning facilities available over it?

Anyone who has purchased a Gigabyte previously will know of its M.I.T (Motherboard Intelligent Feature), which is the primary area in which you will delve should you want to tweak a few settings to get the most out of your setup. All of the usual settings are there. But being a P45 board you can expect a few little extras that allow some very intricate fine tuning.

What type of sound chips are being used in the P45 motherboards?

We use ALC889A sound chip. The Blu-ray playback outputs supported by high quality 106dB SNR HD audio.

What's your comment on the price versus performance of P45 motherboards?

We are very much assured about performance on this segment, as Indian gaming segment is maturing over the time. With such supply in place at competitive prices and various flavors, we look forward to the success.
