HP-Compaq Adopts New Ploy for Eastern Soho Market

HP-Compaq has adopted the 'neighborhood friendly reseller' strategy to try and tap the Soho segment in Kolkata and the rest of the east India market.
Anthony Jose, regional head, HP-Compaq, said, "Everybody wants to have a Compaq machine. However, they feel that the cost is a deterrent. As a result, end users would rather buy non-branded machines from the neighborhood reseller or assembler than visit Compaq showrooms. It is to tap these buyers that we have introduced this strategy which we have termed the 'neighborhood friendly reseller'."
Through this initiative, HP plans to encourage and support any reseller who wants to sell the entry level Compaq Presario model. The only parameter to qualify for this scheme is that the potential reseller or assembler must own an outlet.
"Under this program, the reseller does not have to bother about targets or doing hardcore sales. All this will be taken care of by HP-Compaq. We will generate the walk-ins for the reseller. When we are generating business for him, the question of targets does not arise," Jose said.
Besides training the reseller on retailing, HP-Compaq will also initiate marketing initiatives to brand the outlet. This, according to the vendor, will enable the reseller to establish a name in the market.
The vendor claims its new program will not affect the business of classic larger retails.
"The walk-in customers at these showrooms are brand conscious and usually prefer buying high-end products. While at the 'neighborhood friendly reseller' outlets we are targeting Soho buyers. Since the two are different segments, the business of existing retailers will not be hampered," Jose said.
