IT Business Enjoying Sound Growth In Northeast
By
Arun Pegu
New Delhi, Dec 31, 2007
Northeastern market is considered to be the emerging IT markets in India. The region is also identified as one of the most potential IT markets due to massive growth in the consumers' demand.
The region attracts a lot of foreign investment as it is connected to the international market. It caters to the markets of countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Tibet, Myanmar and Nepal.
According to the Guwahati-based, Sudhir Aggarwal, proprietor of Balaji Computers, "Due to international proximity, the state has immense potential in IT related business. As Guwahati is gateway of Northeast India, all the business and major vendors have established their offices here. For all service related problems, customers only rely on Guwahati."
"As far as services are concerned, Guwahati has considerable amount of service centers. Most of the vendors and distributors have established their service centers here," said Aggarwal.
Like all developing markets, the northeastern market is getting well versed with the latest in technology. Elucidating on recent market scenario, Guwahati-based Sumant Sharma, proprietor of Webx said, "Products like laptops and MP3 players are seeing a rise in demand. Drop in prices and slick designs have amounted to rise in sale."
Existence of corporate offices further enhances the scope for the market to grow. "Demand for IT products, especially in Guwahati, comes from corporates like IOC (Indian Oil Corporation), ONGC (Oil & Natural Gas Corporation of India) and some financial institutions based here," informed Aggarwal.
Moving ahead to other parts of Northeast, all the major brands are doing good business. According to Agartala-based Rajeev Das of 1st Infotech, "Lenovo, Compaq and HP have major say in Agartala. The potential buyers are corporates and student community."
Shillong promises great prospects for the development of IT market. But channel partners feel that the growing service issues might hamper the growth of the business. Today the state is witnessing rise in branded PCs and ratio between branded and assembled is around 60:40. The government vertical generally demands for branded.
Despite the overall rise in the demand of branded products, cities like Tripura and Siliguri are still facing service related issues. The partners are of the view that the vendors should concentrate on providing apt services in order to grab the potential of the market.
