The Indian notebook market has sharply ascended in 2008. In fact, sales have doubled over the previous year with 1.8 million units being deployed in 2007-08.The maximum patrons being the small and medium business who dominated over 50% of total notebook usage.
The radical shift poses a threat to the declining desktop sales, and reviewers feel that the trend is likely to continue with the number of active internet subscribers touching the 7 million mark in 2008.
Prasant Das of Compuplus, Mumbai, said, "Notebook sales had been surging at a slow pace since the past 2-3 years. The difference now is that the shift in the trend has become really transparent. Earlier desktops and notebook sales were running parallel to each other, but owing to factors like mobility and interface advantages people are opting for a more suitable choice."
Notebook usage in Tier 2 and 3 cities too have gone up to 80% hold in overall sales. The zonal leader being Western India with 31% of the PC market. Eastern India also has been on a healthy scale increasing its stake by 10%.
"Vendors are increasingly promoting notebooks and playing on factors like affordability by reducing custom duties, cutting rates. Although, I still get orders for desktops from end-users, the notebook segment is breaking into small enterprises as well as the entry-level. Considering the speed of its expansion in smaller towns, notebooks prove to be efficient in terms of connectivity and price. Desktops will find users, but notebooks are the new future resource," said Mukesh from Modern Technologies, a PC reseller from Mumbai.

I dont think desktops would become obsolete, the reason being maintenance cost of a desktop is very less as compared to laptops, also there is a option of going in for a bigger screen, higher graphics card etc.A home user would always prefer a desktop.. |
