Low Volume Supply Irks Philips Partners
By

Mumbai, Dec 28, 2006
After running into rough weather over backend incentives, Philips is now facing a precarious situation with its channel partners fast opting out of any business tieup with the vendor, owing to product unavailability and unsettled incentive dues.
Mumbai-based Triune Marketing India, onetime Star Partner for Philips, has stopped dealing with the company completely. "We have stopped business with Philips since the last two months," Mrudul Desai, director, told ChannelTimes. Asked what drove him to take such a step, Desai said, "Even if I want to buy Philips products, from where shall I get them? They are not available with the distributors also."
Another channel partner, Hitesh Dedhiya, partner, Modera Computers, echoed similar view, saying, "We have stopped dealing in Philips products since April due to the backend incentives issue. Till date, we have received only part of the incentives."
ChannelTimes had first reported the outcry over the incentive issue in its June 20 news titled "Philips Star Partners Cry Foul on Incentive Issue". The issue had forced city-based resellers' body Trade Association for Information Technology (TAIT) to intervene to help resolve the crisis.
Clarifying on the issue, the vendor, however, asserts that the low volume supply is a "conscious move" to clear backend incentives and it will stage a comeback with "renewed vigor" in 2007. Ankan Biswas, director, Philips, said, "We are aware of the lag in product availability in the market and this is, in fact, a conscious move by Philips to let the backend incentive issue settle down in the market. We will be back with renewed vigor in the New Year and will be continuing our business for computer monitors through the channel."
When contacted Atul Mehta, managing director, Compuage Infocom, which was appointed specialized distributor of Philips in 2003, admitted that there has been substantial fall in business with Philips, but maintained that he would still associate with the company. "There has been a slowdown in the business with Philips due to the pending clearance of incentives. However, we would continue to distribute the Philips monitors," Mehta said.
According to the feedback from the channel community, there has been no supply from the vendor for the last eight to 10 months and the resellers are apprehensive whether Philips will continue its channel business model.
Biswas, too, indicated that the company did not rule out recasting its existing distributor setup and channel partners.

What about issues regarding service? I have a 15" LCD monitor which is just purchased 6-7 months back and service centre is not just responding. Even mails to phillips and the disty from where I made the purchase are not helping in anyway in getting the problem resolved. I can only repent now for having recommended a Philips monitor to my customer, who is now planning legal action against me. |
