By ChannelTimes Staff
Mumbai, Oct 15, 2008 1334 hrs IST

Microsoft has announced the availability of Silverlight 2, the latest version of its Silverlight platform for creating and delivering advanced multimedia applications through a web browser. Launched just over a year ago, the company said that already one in four consumers worldwide has access to a computer with Silverlight installed. "This release will further accelerate our efforts to make Silverlight, Visual Studio and Microsoft Expression Studio the pre-eminent solutions for the creation and delivery of media and rich Internet application experiences," said Scott Guthrie, Corporate VP (.NET Developer Division), Microsoft. Highlights of new Silverlight 2 include .NET framework support with a rich base class library, powerful built-in controls, advanced skinning and templating support, deep zoom, comprehensive networking support, expanded .NET Framework language support, advanced content protection, iimproved server scalability and expanded advertiser support, vibrant partner ecosystem and cross-platform and cross-browser support. Microsoft also announced further support of open source communities by funding advanced Silverlight development capabilities with the Eclipse Foundation's integrated development environment (IDE), and by providing new controls to developers with the Silverlight Control Pack (SCP) under the Microsoft Permissive License.
