Microsoft Software in Short Supply
By
Archana Venkatraman
Mumbai, Feb 23, 2007
Mumbai-based Repro India has stopped the supply of OEM products of Microsoft software leaving the channel partners across India including the national distributors like Ingram Micro to face the repercussions of short supply in software stocks for two weeks now, as per the Microsoft channel across India.
Yogesh Shah, software director, Impetus Infotech, Mumbai said, "There has been a consistent short supply in MS software including XP Home, XP Office and Professional software." He added, "Even the distributors like Ingram and Redington do not have stocks and we are not told anything from the vendor." According to Shah the non-availability of Microsoft has left partners stranded, as they have to hold back the supply of complete PC units.
Repro has been supplying Microsoft OEM products to the latter's channel, including the distributors, for more than six years now. This digital publishing and blue printing services used to pay royalty to the software giant. Recently, the customs and excise department took objection to this method and since, Repro has stopped supplying the material, according to the sources.
Chetan Shah, general secretary, Mumbai-based apex body, TAIT said, "While no official complaint has been registered with us so far, there is definitely a dearth in Microsoft software which is queer and Repro has stopped supplying MS products." He added that this is having major implications on the channel as the prices of MS Software have already gone up to 6-7 percent already.
Krishnan Jaishankar, managing director, Ingram Micro said, "There definitely is a short supply and Repro is no more supplying material to us, but we get it from somewhere else and the regular supply would resume from March." However, he was unaware of whether the supply will be directed from Malaysia as some sources informed ChannelTimes.
Saket Kapoor, PCAIT secretary said, "Repro India has been associated with Microsoft for a long time and supply material to entire Microsoft channel in India and owing to customs issues, there is a shortage of such products."
Partners in Pondicherry and Pune have also confirmed the non-availability of Microsoft software.
When contacted,Microsoft official spokesperson said, "There were some supply shortage in certain pocket in the market. We have resolved the issue and expect normal supply to resume by March first week."

There has been a consistent short supply in MS software including XP Home, XP Office and Professional software. The distributors like Ingram and Redington do not give the adequate information about the education software like C C++ Barland Oracle and other softwares used in Universities as we observe the supply falls short of the the demand . |

Although short supply is creating the problem but its demand- a very good message that users of Genuine software has increased in India and we are respecting the IPR of Microsoft. This will pave the way for Indian entrepreneurs to foray into this kind of business where IPR protection become critical. If we Indian industrialists wanna become Indian MNC then we will have to respect IPR, as we are having so much technology right from Vedas to today IITians that we may become Financial superpower exploring our past. |
