Microsoft's Answer to Piracy
By

New Delhi, Feb 6, 2008
Microsoft has launched an e-commerce portal last week that will act as a one-stop shop for the purchases of original software.
The portal will provide an opportunity to customers to directly go in and buy genuine software online; on the other hand also enable channel partners to set up their e-stalls online for free of cost.
Brian Campbell, director- original software initiative for Microsoft India said, "Contrary to all the beliefs that, this portal will marginalize the physical presence of channel partners and adversely affect on their margins, it will actually help them to serve customers in the wider geographical boundaries."
Channel partners can build their e-stalls by registering online and selecting the items from the MS product range. They can also put in some value added services that will prevent a customer from going to other e-stall.
Harish Bahl, founder and CEO of Smile Interactive Technologies group said, "By this, we are also creating a healthy competition among the channel customers as there is no entry barrier and no need to carry any inventory."
According to a report, India itself has lost USD 1,250 million in 2006 due to software piracy, a substantial increase from USD 367 million in 2003. "In such a scenario, e-commerce platform is providing a reliable platform for the purchase of genuine software", claims Brian.
As it's the first time when Microsoft is leveraging an online platform for its marketing initiative, the company is excited as the portal is getting footfalls and has started picking up sales within three days of its launch.
