Nokia Laptops Coming Soon?

By Techtree News Staff
Mumbai, Feb 26, 2009 1443 hrs IST

If Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo is to be believed, Nokia might enter the lucrative laptops segment in the near future.

He was talking to Finnish national broadcaster YLE on Wednesday where Nokia's first official confirmation regarding its intentions to join the laptops fray came to light. It is pertinent to note that there have been rumors within the telecom circle earlier regarding such a move from the world's largest handset maker.

Of late, we have seen PC makers jump on to the cellphone bandwagon with the latest such example coming from famed PC maker Acer. At last week's Mobile World Congress 2009, the company launched a range of Windows Mobile based smartphones. Even Dell is considering manufacturing its own mobile phone in the near future.

Now, with Nokia inching ahead towards manufacturing laptops, the gap between traditional PC and phone makers is dwindling faster than expected. This could also be seen as the gradual convergence of technology where mobile phones have become almost as capable as laptops.

Nokia is also reportedly working on a Mobile Internet Device (MID) resembling its current N-Series tablets, with a slide-out keyboard and powered most possibly by an ARM Cortex A9 Sparrow chip.
