Philips Begins Releasing Incentive Dues

By Archana Venkatraman
Mumbai, May 15, 2006

Philips India has started clearing the pending incentive dues of its Star partners selectively.

The company had introduced three incentive schemes for its partners - the OND (October/November/December) scheme, the January-February and March schemes. However, by March 2006, when none of the incentives from the schemes were cleared, the partners were upset and this, in turn, affected the sales of Philips products.

Tushar Das, distribution head, Philips India, said, "This (clearing the dues) definitely is the focus for Philips, but as it involves money we have to be cautious and ensure that it reaches the right person. Clearing of incentives is an ongoing process now and we would not be able to comment on how long it will take. However, we have started dealing with partners already."

However, Ankan Biswas, director, Philips, refrained to comment on the issue.

The selective clearance process, however, has not gone down well with many Star partners who are yet to receive their dues.

Mrudul Desai, GM, Triune, a Star partner of Philips, said, "Philips always deals out a preferential treatment to some partners. Only Real Time Computers seem to have got their outstandings cleared. We have been daily updating Philips and asking for an account, but there has been no response and the matter is put on hold."

Blaming Philips for the sales setback in April, Desai added, "There is no communication from its accounts department or from its senior-level officials, only Tushar Das, who has replaced Sanjay Maheshwari, is communicating with us and taking inputs from us. But we understand that the team is just buying time."

He said that to safeguard the capital put in their business, partners like him are now pressurizing the distributors like Compuage. Compuage chairman Atul Mehta preferred not to comment on the issue at the moment.

Ashwin Kukreja, the owner of Real Time Computers, whose incentives were finally cleared, said, "The deal was absolutely fair and transparent, but we are not totally happy, as we got only a little more than 80 percent of the entire amount. From now on the channel will be more cautious and ensure that every commitment from the vendor is put to paper and not just a word-of-mouth."

He also added that the new team has done the needful in a short span of time, as clearing incentives was primary in their agenda. "While last month there had been a major setback for Philips products in the market, they have started catching up now because of this news," he said.

Irfan, proprietor of Apple Infosys, said, "Philips owes to the partners over 20 percent from the June-July-August incentives, apart from the last six months' outstandings."

According to sources at Lamington Road, Philips has an outstanding of around Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore in Mumbai alone.
How do you look at this incentive issue?

An ex employee of Philips India had warned the Management to be ware of Sanjay Maheshwari. As a wellwisher of Philips India , I wish the management had paid heed to that warning/advise-this day wouldn't have come. It pains to read bad comments against Philips India which is indeed an extremely professional company with dedicated /loyal and sincere GMs like Mr. Ankan Biswas .All the best to Philips India.

Philips partners may take some respite from the experience of Samsung partners who experience this situation every other quarter from Samsung and still continue to do Samsung business. Don't worry guys, if not today, then definitely tomorrow or the next day or so they will clear 60% of your dues. Don't worry !!!!

I have been given to understand, that Philips do not owe you anything. I spoke to Vishal, who showed me mails to that effect. As a well wisher of IT channels, I spoke to Sanjay, who refrained to comment on this and said it was Vishal solely dealing with Guwhati Partners, but said, that he is available for any clarifications if required either by Company or any Partner.

The incentives should be put on papers beforehand so that the company does not backtrack on its committments. As is the practice all commitments are made verbally which can not be justified if some one leaves the company as is the case here where Mr. Maheshwari has quietly left leaving the partners in the lurch.
