Are you bored with the dull pictures and gloomy colors when you play your favorite DVD videos on your desktop? Do you want more lively video entertainment? Then it is high-time to switch over to the next-generation optical disc format.
Sony Electronics has unveiled its first internal Blu-ray Disc (BD) ROM Drive (BDU-X10S) for the Indian market, which will be available through its distributor Rashi Peripherals. The product will offer users an option to upgrade their desktop to a Blu-ray player, which will also play DVDs and CDs.
While talking about the new product, Kapal Pansari, director (Marketing), Rashi Peripherals, informed, "With Indian economy booming, users now look for nothing but the best of the breed products, and with a brand like Sony one can be confident of getting that with ease. Secondly, PCs have proven an excellent medium to propagate a new technology and the Blu-ray Disc ROM drives are just going to be one of the excellent options for the users."
Contextually, the Blu-ray ROM format has been developed to enable playback of high-definition video. The format offers more than 5 times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs. It can hold up to 25 GB on a single-layer disc and 50 GB on a dual-layer disc.
Blu-ray movie discs are now available in India. There are many entertainment companies worldwide who have been publishing movies in Blu-ray format. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has already introduced several movies in Blu-ray format. The company recently announced that it will bring the Adam Sandler/Jack Nicholson film Anger Management to Blu-ray on May 20 this year.
The BDU-X10S now comes bundled with CyberLink's Power DVD Edition software for playback of commercial movie titles, recorded Blu-ray Disc home videos, DVD-ROMs and CD ROMs. It also supports playback of recorded Blu-ray Discs in MPEG-2 or H.264 format, standard DVD-Video discs or recorded DVDs encoded with MPEG-2 or AVCHD formats.
The internal drive of the product allows transfer of data or videos through its Serial ATA (SATA) interface. Its standard 5.25-inch form factor enables it getting installed in desktop PCs running Microsoft Windows Vista or XP operating systems. Thus, it is capable of replacing existing DVD-ROM drives that are common in Indian desktops.
The BDU-X10S can play back commercial Blu-ray movies as well as personally created Blu-ray contents. Commercial Blu-ray movies can be viewed on computers that incorporate an HDCP-compliant graphics card offering DVI or HDMI connections, HDCP-compliant computer display and software that supports BD-ROM playback.
The 5.25 x 1.63 x 7.0 Sony Blu-ray drive is a combination of 8x DVD ROM (Read only), 24x CD-ROM (Read only), and has a data buffer size of 4 MB.
The new drive will be available at maximum retail price of approx. Rs.11,850 and comes with a 1-year-warranty. According to Rashi sources, the price is quite reasonable considering the quality of video entertainment that the product will deliver. Rashi will tie up with the existing Blu-ray disc and HD TV sellers to distribute this product.
