Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a processing power house that continuously strives in making technology more accessible to the world. The company has taken up new initiatives to widen its reach and deepen penetration in India through IT channels. In an exclusive interview with Channeltimes, Deepanshu Sharma, General Manager of the company, talks on some of the company plans, products and policies to Pallabika Ganguly. Excerpts...
How are you planning to build up your forte in India - through widening the market or through deep penetration or both?
We strongly feel that expansion has to be horizontal as well as vertical. It is important to strengthen our relationship with existing partners as much it is to reach out to new partners across new geographies. Ensuring our presence in tier 2, 3 and 4 cities has become a more than ever mandate for us to be able to leverage the immense opportunities presented by the increasing demand for PCs in the country. On the other hand, with the kind of innovative product line-up that we have released recently, it is important to support it by concentrating our efforts to educate and motivate our existing channel partners. We always focus on a balanced strategy by widening the market share and penetrating deep into the market.
What is the latest offering from AMD as far as technology is concerned?
Our acquisition of ATI has opened up new doors for us in the graphics and chipset market. Today, we are positioned as the only company globally with expertise in three of the most important PC technologies. We recently announced a very innovative range of products in all the three categories. In the processor space, we are the only company to come up with the world's only triple-core processor- AMD Phenom X3. In addition, we released the AMD Phenom quad-core processors for users that are looking for the most compelling solutions in desktops.
In the graphics and chipset technologies, we launched the 4800 series and the 780 series respectively, both of which bring significant benefits to consumers. The 780 series chipset, is designed to deliver the ultimate mainstream computing experience, whereas the 4800 series graphics cards are TeraScale graphics engines that allow consumers to experience the power of graphics 'supercomputing' delivering an immersive, cinematic gaming experience.
On the platform front, we announced the AMD Turion Ultra, which offers a truly mobile experience for users as the technologies related to processor, graphics, chipset, and wireless modules have been developed by AMD. This results in advanced power-saving and security features for the consumer.
Do you foresee any effect on sales of your products in India because of IT slow down this year?
Though large enterprises have been cautious in the past few months, what's interesting is that they have always been prudent in their decisions. That means, products such as the AMD Opteron quad-core are compelling enough for them to go ahead with purchases. In the SMB and home segments, the buying is more need driven and we are witnessing an upward trajectory in the growth of our business here.
There have been opinions that the percentage of casual buyers will be affected by the slowdown, but I strongly feel that PC purchase is usually never casual. PCs are bought by consumers who really need it at that point of time. In fact, in the second quarter, we noticed that desktops have again grabbed the market, which is a sign that the market is growing.

Ah! I wish AMD did a global launch of ther products instead of selective releases for India.
I switched to Intel after dailing to find BE-2xxx or the 48xxe (energy efficient processors) in Bangalore
