Although there has been a decline in spam volume (by 40%) and new zombies in the past quarter, the enterprises and home users have witnessed increase in attacks through malicious web content and blended security attacks.
According to Secure Computing's Q2 Internet Threat Report, released recently, during Q2 2007 to Q2 2008 there was a growth in the overall spam volume by 280%. In addition, Q2 of 2007 witnessed over 300,000 new zombies per day, and during the Q2 2008 it has decreased by 50%. Even though both spam and new zombies are down this year, the researchers point to other areas that are increasingly problematic.
"We are witnessing change every single day in how the cyber criminals are developing new vectors of attack. Through our advanced TrustedSource global reputation system, and our research team's ability to analyze and classify terabytes of email, Web and network traffic in real-time, we are in an excellent position to identify new trends and protect our customers from new insidious threats," said Dmitri Alperovitch, director (Intelligence Analysis), Secure Computing.
As per the report, over 16% of all spam originates from the US. Spam like male enhancement, product replica and prescription drug topped the unwanted list of spam. Swizzor, a rapidly growing ad/spyware family, now makes up more than 30% of all new malware in Q2 of 2008.
