Sun Microsystems India's External Unix Storage revenues grew by 178 percent in India in the period June 2004 to July 2005 (Sun's financial year) from the corresponding period in 2003-04, according to IDC.
With this achievement, the company has leapfrogged to become the joint No. 1 player in this storage market and has become the fastest growing player in this segment, a company release said.
With the completion of the acquisition of StorageTek, Sun has unveiled its new data storage portfolio. "The products, services and solutions currently offered by Sun and StorageTek complement each other, and form one of the most comprehensive storage and data management portfolios in the industry," said Randy Kerns, VP, strategy and planning, data management group, Sun Microsystems.
"Coupled with StorageTek's new line of data protection and intelligent archive products, including its Storage Resource Management software and virtual tape solutions, Sun customers will have the ability to implement comprehensive ILM storage infrastructure with intelligence to maximize storage utilization and ensure compliance in enterprise, midrange and workgroup environments," Kerns added.
According to Vijay Pradhan, country manager, data management group, Sun Microsystems India, "Sun and StorageTek are synergistic in product sets and solutions. Together we bring more than 60 years of combined experience in network computing, data storage and data management expertise. This is virtually unmatched in the industry."
He further added, "Sun is committed to continuing StorageTek's legacy of openness and accessibility to its customers, including giving customers input into product road maps. Sun is also committed to enhancing and upgrading our line of StorageTek solutions while maintaining compatibility."
Sun acquired StorageTek for $4.1 billion in June 2005 and completed the acquisition on September 1, 2005. With the completion of the acquisition, StorageTek becomes a part of Sun's data management group (DMG), formerly named Sun's Network Storage Group (NWS). The DMG consists of three distinct business units - Disk, Tape, and ILMS (Information Lifecycle Management Solutions) - that are supported by storage sales and services organizations, as well as data management experts committed to innovation in software, hardware and solutions development.
In the months ahead, the advanced Solaris User and Process Rights Management software capabilities offered with Solaris will come together with Sun's advanced identity management solutions and information lifecycle management strategy to help secure data and automate its movement across the entire enterprise. Moving forward, Sun will provide customers with flexibility and choice in storage and data management offerings for heterogeneous environments, the release stated.
One of the most significant results of the acquisition is the combination of Sun's strength in network identity with the StorageTek's core competence in data archiving and information lifecycle management thus making Sun a dominant player in providing end-to-end information lifecycle management and technology solutions.
