Symantec Doesn't Rule Out Security as a Service
By
Pearl Mistry
Mumbai, Sep 13, 2007
At a time when IT security is witnessing different paradigms of growth, Symantec India hasn't ruled out security emerging as a service.
"We're not completely ruling out the possibility of security as a service and we'll look into that when we feel that the market is conducive to the idea," said Annette Martis, manager (Consumer Products and Solutions) of Symantec India.
However, she said, "In the current Indian scenario, I feel that buyers still prefer to touch and feel their purchase - like a CD. At this point, the physical market works more efficiently and end-users are more comfortable with a physical box."
Dwelling on the Norton Champs program, an India specific initiative to merchandise the retail outlets, she said the program launched on June 1, 2007 has reached 180 cities covering about 1750 dealers.
"Under this program, a reseller would be able to order merchandise online like - posters, pamphlets, etc, by next quarter. We've seen a good response from the big cities, because over 1000 registered members are from the metros and other major cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Pune," said Martis.
Answering questions on what really Symantec is stressing on under the program, she said, "The program was created because we believe that the more aware the retailer is; the more information a customer can derive from him. Information dissemination toward resellers and end-users is our prime objective."
The vendor is also trying to reach out to the partners in the B- and C- class cities through Norton Champs. Agreeing that reaching out to partners in the smaller cities poses a hurdle in conducting training programs regularly, she said, Symantec is exploring the feasibility of distributing fact sheets and training modules to them, which they can take up at their leisure and update their knowledge.
On the company's distribution network, she said, besides main distributors - Ingram Micro and Redington - it has appointed 7 sub-distributors who cater to resellers. To another question, she said although the vendor's current network is spread pan India, it's looking for 1 sub-distributor in Rajasthan.
