Symantec Stresses on Education to Combat Piracy

By Vijay Vedala
Mumbai, Jul 10, 2007

To be effective in the campaign against software piracy, Symantec strongly advocates the need to balance enforcement with education.

According to Dinesh Jotwani, senior IP counsel (Asia Pacific) of Symantec, "Awareness is one aspect to combat piracy, the other being law enforcement. In a software piracy case, the crime has to be reported and action has to be taken immediately. In most cases, there is a delay in the action taken and hence it results in evidence getting damaged."

To combat piracy, Symantec has established a Brand Protection Task Force that focuses on three different areas. Enforcement - to track down, investigate and shut down the operations involving counterfeit Semantec software. Education - to raise awareness among the public about the existence of such software and the dangers associated with it. And finally, Engineering - to have technological solutions to inhibit pirated and counterfeit production of Symantec software.

To help the partners identify counterfeits, Symantec has ongoing training programs for partners to help them identify genuine products from counterfeit products. "When piracy increases, the sales of the channel partners are affected badly. They are the first ones to get affected badly as they work at the ground level," Jotwani added.

Quoting figures from IDC-BSA, Jotwani said that 72% of the software in India is pirated. "Online piracy is one of the biggest issues that software companies face today, which is further compounded by the fact that a large number of legitimate online shops are also involved in uploading and selling pirated software through the Net," he said.

According to Jotwani, the domestic software industry has been running into losses of over half a billion.

First you buy (or pirate) software that gets you into trouble (with piracy). Then, that software gets you free viruses the moment you connect to net and exchange data. And then you need anti-virus which requires further expense or more piracy. Why all this trouble, when you can start using OpenLX Linux and be free of viruses and crashes ? OpenLX Linux is easier than windows to install, gives you the fantastic grafical user interface, afordable (costing just Rs. 500/- or free to download) and comprehensive (OS, Office, Internet, Grafics, Games, Multimedia, Utilities, accounting, servers and plenty of things that you can explore, including audio-video editing software. Have a look at it and enjoy life.

I downloaded a Norton Anti virus program. After it expired, I tryed to remove the download. I was not permitted to do so. Since the Norton antivrus program expired, I have been inundated with adware ostensibly from Symantec telling me my computer is infected and I need to purchase another program from Symantec in order to remove the virus. It soon became apparent that the virus was from Symantec. It has come to the point where the downloaded Symantec program controls my computer. For all intents and purposes I cannot use the computer. I beleive this can be construed as a tresspass to chattels cause of action. How can I remove your program from my computer? This type of marketing is unconscionable.
