Third Wave Plans Major Thrust For Toughbooks

By Sharmee Roy
New Delhi, Mar 4, 2006

Third Wave Exim, the sole distributor of Panasonic notebooks - Toughbooks - is trying to shed its low-key approach and get more aggressive to push the notebooks in the market.

Speaking about the notebooks, Asad Ansari, head-north operations, Third Wave Exim, said, "We don't think that we are competing with any brand in the market since about 92 percent of these notebooks are manufactured in-house barring the processor and the hard drive. We are not in the number game and our aim is to create a space in the market for these notebooks since these are very niche products.

"The Toughbooks are specifically meant for the high-end segment and people who are already using notebooks. The major focus would be to push the notebooks in certain verticals like defense, government and telecom. These notebooks are categorized into two categories, business and rugged, with the business range starting from Rs 1.6 lakh and rugged range starting from Rs 2 lakh."

Beginning February 2006, the distributor had started a series of advertisement campaign in major dailies to create awareness about the brand and later on also plans to go ahead with similar initiatives in local dailies. In addition to this, the distributor is looking at other promotional activities like sponsorship of events and has also been offering the notebooks to the customers to use and give their feedback.

On the channel front, the distributor works with strategic partners, who incorporate Panasonic notebooks as a part of their total solution especially for the government, and the conventional IT channels. These conventional IT channels are further categorized into premium partners and authorized partners.

Ansari said, "The premium partners are those partners who work directly with us and have the demo kits with them, while the authorized partners are the ones who have worked under the premium partners. We have about 25 to 30 premium partners across the country and don't have any plans of taking this number to more than 35."

The distributor has five premium partners in Delhi and one partner each in all major state capitals.

Talking about the parameters on which partners are appointed, Ansari said, "The most critical and important factor is a partner's focus on this product. Credibility is yet another factor, along with committed case-to-case partners. And our partners are primarily the IT channels who are also into office automation."

The distributor has already chalked out the roadmap for the year, but has specific number targets as of now.
What do you think of Third Wave's new plans?
