Transcend Alerts Partners on Fake Jetrams

By Sharmee Roy
New Delhi, Jun 26, 2006

Transcend has cautioned its channel partners against fake jetrams circulating in the market particularly in Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai channels. These jetrams are flowing into the Indian market through parallel imports from Hong Kong and Singapore.

Providing more details, Andy Yu, spokesperson of Transcend, said, "We came to know about this through our RMA centers in June. Now that we know about it, we have to take guard against it. As far as we know these fakes are coming into the Indian market from Hong Kong or Singapore and they are not the official channel of Transcend."

According to Yu, the jetram UTT chipsets can be easily sourced from China without any warranty. The company is relying on its channel partners and distributors to educate and effectively communicate this message to its customers. These fake RAMs have been reported in the markets of Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai.

"We also push our channels to sell Transcend brand instead of jetram UTT chipset. In China manufacturers can get UTT chips easier than ETT. This is not only resulting in a loss, but also damaging Transcend's reputation. End-users may not know that they are buying the counterfeit, so we are now pushing our distributors to pass this information to our channels harder," Yu said.

The vendor has advised its channel to check the invoice or any other proof they offer more stringently while offering RMA service since it is difficult to make out the real ones from the fakes by just taking a look at them.
How do you view this menace of fake RAMs?

Buy Kingston. World's no. 1 in memory. Its market share is 30% and Transcend is 4%. Kingston has unique sticker on module for verification.

Hello Kejriwal, How does Kingston compare in quality and price against Transcend? I was looking to buy Transcend 240-pin DIMM DDR2 533 Mhz - 1 Gb capacity. What will be the price and quality of a comparable Kingston piece? TIA, Sanjay.

Besides the problem of fake RAMs, we are also contending with high price. The past fortnight has seen a spike in the price of 1GB Ram of 533 Mhz speed by as much as Rs 1,200/-. Any ideas why this has happened, and any ideas as to when it is likely to come down?

What chipset does Transcend use, UTT i.e. Untested Memory, sometimes it comes JEtFlash and sometimes in Jetram. What is the difference between UTT and ETT.

ETT means effectively tested chips hope you can differentiate the quality between tested and nontested.
