Ubuntu Selects Confed-ITA to Spread Wings in TN

With Linux gaining ground across the globe, a significant development is happening at the Confederation of Information Technology Association (Confed-ITA) in Tamil Nadu.
Recently, three professionals from Ubuntu, a Linux distribution, launched a pilot training project for select members of the Confederation to promote its open source solutions.
Ubuntu is a predominantly desktop-oriented Linux distribution, based on Debian GNU/Linux, but with a stronger focus on usability, regular releases, and ease of installation. Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical - a privately owned company, founded and funded by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, for the promotion of free software projects.
According to Karthik S, president of Confed-ITA, the representatives from Ubuntu approached the Association with interesting offerings. He said, "They have primarily offered solutions and are also ready to train channel partners."
This is the first time Canonical is doing a training program for OEM partners across the world. Maria (worldwide OEM business head), Billy (worldwide training head), and Mathew (head of Indian operations) were the 3 representatives from the Linux distribution who oversaw the training. About 10 channel partners underwent the 2-day Ubuntu Linux training program held at Coimbatore on July 2 and 3, 2007. The NIIT faculty from Delhi conducted the training sessions.
Commenting on this initiative, P. N. Prasad, vice president of Confed-ITA, said, "The pilot project was a success. Through this training the partners were able to clarify many of their doubts regarding the usage of Linux." He further added that the representatives collected feedback from the partners. Incorporating the feedback, they plan to develop a more fine-tuned curriculum, which will be rolled out across the state some time later this year.
The Linux distribution house is offering operating system and office-related software solutions for desktop.
As part of the course material, each participant was given an Ubuntu Linux Installer CD. The channel partners have requested the company to send more CDs so as to circulate them among all the Confed-ITA members. At present, the Association has 650 members on its rolls.
Confed-ITA was formed in April 2007 by resellers from across South India to present a united front against vendors for resolving channel issues. The Confederation comprises IT associations from Pondicherry, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Vellore, Trichy, Thirunelveli, Kumbakonam, and Madurai.

Sorry. Confed-ITA was not formed as an united front against Vendors. The main objects were to work together, work for profits, avoid exploitation by vendors, train the channel members on technology and business processes, cooperate and grow together. Confed-ITA has been working closely with many vendors in bringing more business and revenue generating opportunities to our members. |

Confed-ITA is working closely will vendors who are interested in training the channel members on its products. Many new products are introduced into the channel without any training which is causing losses by way of wastage of time in learning by mistakes, brakages of small parts etc. Vendors should siege this opportunity to partner with channels in training their members in product and technology. We are pleasantly surprised by the hardwork put in by Ubuntu team in taking this CUE and delivering the training in the best possible professional way. |

I would like to clarify certain things here.
1. No one would be able select Confed-ITA.It would be the choice of the Executive commitee which will decide.
2. we have already discussed with Microsoft on so many options of working with them closely.
3. There are some of our Channels who are showing interest in open source along with Ubuntu. Ubuntu had shown a lot of interest in showcasing & training channels on their product.
4. The executive commitee is yet to discuss on this
