The three-day long mega event - e-India, organized in New Delhi, attracted nearly 400 delegates from across the globe. The event put together several private institutions, technology providers, software solution companies, as well as government agencies under one roof.
This mega exhibition-cum-conference highlighted the role of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in education, governance, planning and health services. Several educational software and learning tools developing companies showcased their products and demonstrated solutions at the venue.
The conference took off with a welcome address by M P Narayanan, president of Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies (CSDMS). Inaugurated by D Purandeshwari, Minister of State for Higher Education, (Ministry of HRD), Government of India, the event is said to be the first-of-its kind in India.
"With the paradigm shift, the education sector is on the verge to boom," she said. Purandeshwari also stressed upon incorporating solar energy in classrooms so that ICT can be used undisrupted. Referring children as the citizens of tomorrow, she said that there is a need to create such content that attracts students to come back to class.
Subash Pani, Secretary, Planning Commission stressed upon the role of Communication Technology for the empowerment of children. Nandan M. Nilekani, CEO, Infosys, argued on the implementation of accounting systems in organizations, in order to create virtually stronger back-end process.
V N Rajeshekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, said that India has emerged as the first country in the world to have EDUSAT, an exclusive educational satellite in space.
It may be recalled that EDUSAT, which weighs nearly 2,000 kg, was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by ISRO s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
"ICT is impacting the educational system in India, and the country has emerged as one of the driving forces with enhanced telecommunications and computing systems," said Pillai.
"ICT is not a stand alone agenda but a cross-cutting enabler for all the priorities," said Oleg Petrov, coordinator with e-Development of ICT Department in World Bank.
The companies - Abode, Almoe, Edurite, HughesNet, Globus, Visa, SafeNet, iMark, Infokall, Educomp and MBD Alchemie, as well as Digital Empowerment Foundation were among the exhibitors. The event sponsors list includes Microsoft and Intel.
