Wipro Introduces Toxin-free Green Desktops

By Manu Sharma
Bangalore, Jan 29, 2010 1933 hrs IST

Wipro Infotech has unveiled its new eco-friendly 'Greenware' desktops that it claims is completely free of deadly chemicals like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

The company currently manufactures about 3 lakh units of desktops, notebooks and servers from its two manufacturing units located at Kotdwar and Pondicherry.

Anand Sankaran, senior vice president & business head, India & ME Business, said, We are the first in India and among a few worldwide who have achieved this distinction. In fact, Nokia is ahead of us and we, along with Samsung, are at par. It took us two years to develop the product and are now set to manufacture 10-15% of Greenware range desktops during the next fiscal.

The company is targeting enterprises and the government sector as customers for the new range. On the pricing front, Sankaran said it is at par with the other non-green products.

Wipro s journey in green started in 2006 and by 2007 the company brought out products that were RoHS compliant and now a new range free from PVC and BFRs.

There are still some more chemicals that need to be eliminated but they are not as deadly as these and will be done in a phased manner, said Ashok Tripathy, GM & Head, Wipro System & Technology Business.

Based on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Wipro s   Greenware is free from carcinogenic materiasl such as PVC and BFRs. We consider the new Greenware range free of PVC and BFR a major breakthrough in our clean production and recycling policy. It is a very difficult process with no known alternative solution and has taken over two years in efforts, investments to come out with a completely toxin-free product," said Sankaran.
