Yahoo! India Maps Go Vernacular

By ChannelTimes Staff
Mumbai, Apr 4, 2008

The Yahoo! India Maps will now be available in 9 Indian languages, namely, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali and Punjabi.

The users can search for directions across 179 cities, 4,767 towns, and 2,26,114 villages. The service is accessible via email, SMS and web. Besides providing key landmarks along the route (ATMs, hospitals, etc.), the walking direction also claims to provide clarity on every major turn, the company said in a statement. There is also an option to zoom to any point on the map, save it as an image and share it with others.

So, if you open Yahoo! India Maps and go to Gujarat and click on the "vernacular" option, you can see the map in Gujarati. Similarly, if you search for Mumbai, you can see the map in Marathi.

According to Gopal Krishna, head (audience) of Yahoo! India, localization of the maps will enable a large community of new users to come online.

In the recent past, companies like Google and MapMyIndia have also offered some similar options, although these companies have not yet added the vernacular feature. Guruji.com is also planning to offer such service in Bengali, Marathi, and Punjabi in the near future.

Probably, Yahoo! India must have gone a step ahead of Google and MapMyIndia by introducing this feature. But, the question remains will this service really have the utility value.

With internet usage in India not very high (roughly 45 million subscribers) and most users belonging to metros, one can't be sure whether this service will really benefit the masses. Moreover, problems like power cuts in the metros or other Indian cities, low download speed, etc. only add to the woes of internet users.

In such a scenario, people in towns, villages, and smaller cities can only hope that they'll be able to make use of such a service in the future.
Will the new feature benefit the masses?
