AMD Unleashes Sub-30K NextGen-64 PC
By
Clyde Fernandes
Mumbai, May 26, 2004
AMD is aggressively pushing its Athlon 64-bit PCs by extensively advertising its NextGen-64 Business PC priced at sub-30K, mainly targeting the business segment.
Sanjeev Keskar, country manager, said, "We are focusing on getting the 64-bit Athlon to the enterprises as well as the common man. With 32-bit processing getting obsolete, a 64-bit processor is an investment that will be protected in the next wave of 64-bit computing applications.
"Today's PC processors run only 32-bit computing applications. These applications are evolving into high-performing 64-bit computing, and would demand 64-bit processing capability from PCs," added Keskar.
Currently, the NextGen-64 Business PC is powered by the Athlon 64 Processor 2800+ with an option of a MSI, Asus or Gigabyte motherboard with onboard sound and graphics, 256 MB DDR RAM, 40 GB HDD, 52X CD-ROM, 15" color monitor, modem, mouse, keyboard and speakers for sub-30K.
AMD is also offering the AMD Athlon XP Processor 2600+ in a similar offer and the Athlon XP 32-bit processor-based PCs starting at sub-20 K. Independent SIs will build these PCs, and warranty and support will be given according to their discretion.
It is currently conducting roadshows in various parts of the country and promises many advertisements every quarter in leading newspapers and publications, to promote the brand in India.

Well after readnig the news of 90nm AMD A64 Chips making to market, I havea big grinn on my face....Intel has fallen flat on its face with 90nm. While AMD is able to take advantage of benifits associated with push to 90nm (mainly cost). So we are going to have more AMD A64s and at more affordable prices too. With A64's Cool n Quiet its a real boon for the ones who spend more time with PC, you dont go deaff anytime soon as with Intel 2.8E machine really sounding like a vaccum running. GO AMD. Only thing needed is more amazing chipsets supporting PCIe and GB lan to make it a proper performance to value ratio. A64 3000, 1 GB CorsairXMSPC3200, MSI K8N Neo Platinum, 40GB Hitachi+200GB Maxtor, XFX 5900XT. I think my system rocks. Needed water cooling for both CPU as well as GPU to make it real Cool overclock. Peace. |

Only Gigabyte has competitve Motherboards for AMD-64 platform both in VIA Chipset K8VT800M & SIS based K8S760M. |

Yes,but there is a flipside. Till the time Microsoft comes out with commercial launch of their Windows XP,64 Bit OS, the market for 64 bit PCs is likely to grow at a snails pace.
But the writing is on the wall for the 32 bit CPUs to become extinct in the next 12 months time.
Alraedy we see a new found awareness among the public on X 86,64 bit technology.
AMD should should encash their monoploy in the 64 bit desktop segment by aggressively campaigning in the IT magazines, journals by publishing the performance benchmarks of their 64 bit CPUs from K8 Family.
AMD also should should coopearte with large SI companies in India to offer a complete end-to-end solutions for CAD/CAM,CFD/CFX application users based on AMD 64 platform. |

Navin Seth, What you don't understand is that AMD64 works just as fine in 32-bit mode as it does in 64-bit mode, which means that you can use todays Winxp with office n the jingles and tomorrow when windows 64 is available, just do a simple upgrade, messagebox at microsoft's site says that the 64-bit upgrade will be a SP, which means no additional cost for those who're using legal versions. Pirated versions, well you haven't paid MS anything to get this upgrade so wait until some thai bloke generates a crack.
By the way, I saw the price point at Sub-25k... which is a straight 5k off what is being said here, did anyone see the latest ads in the newspaper and maybe verify if i got my story right. |

I don't think the market is yet ready
for the 64 bit segment, there are only a handful of applications that can truly exploit the 64 bit advantage, even most existing engineering applications that have been ported for the 64 bit still use the same 32 bit old libraries hence you cannot expect any significant advantage there, may be another 6-10 months & you should see the real diff between 32 & 64 bit systems. |

Hi,
I think this is a good aggressive move by AMD and I am sure they will gain marketshare through this. However it would have been good if they could have bundled a good, userfriendly, low cost Linux Desktop too. There is no OS bundled in this deal. That would have made the offer complete. It would have even helped corporates to take a quick favourable decision. Let me know if we can be of any help. I am available at 011-33472471. |

this processor heading fast towards killing the 32bit space that has dominated the computing scene for the last decade. This is nothing, the Opteron processors are a absolute killer, we have sold over 50 servers on opteron and all our customers are very happy with the performance that they deliver at low cost.
2P server with 2 Processors for 59999
4P server with 4 Processors for 499999
specs below.
4 nos. Opteron 844 @ 1.8 GHz 1MB L2 Cache
2 GB ECC Reg. DDR RAM (upto 20GB)
12 Hotswap bays, 3 RPS - 550w, SATA
36GB 10000 RPM, 4U Rackmount
this is the cheapest 4 processor server (with enterprise features ) that you can buy. and that too a 64bit one that can give you 20GB RAM capablility and better performace than Xeon MP 2.8 GHz which costs a bomb.
Please contact us for AMD Validated servers/workstations.

AMD ATHLON 64 with enhanced Virus protection with the upcomming XP-SP2 and 1600 MHz FSB (double of intel p4) and the most important part the 32 bit capablility even though its a 64Bit processor gives enterprises headroom and performance of tommorow today.
I think this round has also been won by AMD. and the Athlon 64 motherboards are feature packed with 1.6 GHz FSB, DDR400 Support, Hypertransport, USB2, Firewire,SATA Raid, 64MB Dedicated Video RAM (+64mb optionally shareble)
make it a killer in comparision to intel's offerings at a 6k pricepoint.

Yes, certainly 64-bit processor is going to kill the 32-bit. For example, being a sceintist, I have to deal with some big simulation and other numerical computation where 64-bit computing will be great to avoid 'overflow'. I must add that AMD-64 is not a genuine 64-bit processor in that it has a subprocessor which can handle 64-bit computing on and above a 32-bit processor,so that it can simultaneously handle both 32-bit x86 software programs as well as 64-bit instruction. Remember that the most of the current day software are written in 32-bit and here AMD wins over Intel. I heard the rumors here in US that at the end of this year there will be very few buyers for 32-bit processor, once Windows 64-bit OS comes into the market. So long live 64-bit! |

Think 32-bit will survive a further 3 or 4 generations of 64-bit processors before it dies completely. |

Very Good Move by AMD. Nice push to 64Bit Computing. I mean who wont like "affordable" technological Advantages. Now, I personally think My HTPC still get a AMD Athlon 64 2800 instead of a 2600. I feel and have enough articles around the WEB to tell me that 2800 will be a overall good bet, better then what I earlier thought of( P4 2.4 G 512KB, 800FSB). SO then welcome to affordable 64 Bit computing arena. |

AMD is keeping the pressure on Intel by shadowing Intel's moves into the value market. Since Intel was shifting into value/volume with 90nm prescotts, AMD will beat them in both price, performance and value.
