Nasscom, Mumbai Police to Hold Cyber Safety Week
By
Renu Bohra
Mumbai, Aug 21, 2004
The National Association of Software and Services (Nasscom), along with Mumbai Police, will organize its second annual Cyber Safety Week (CSW) from August 23 to 28.
Being organized under the aegis of Mumbai Cyber Lab, launched last year, the program seeks to spread awareness about cyber safety and educate users about the risks and hazards of using the Net. It also aims to minimize the chances of fraud on the Net and take benefits of IT to the masses.
Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom, said, "India has become one of the most favored destinations for sourcing software and IT-enabled services. In this scenario, it is important to provide a safe and secure environment. In CSW, the role of Nasscom will be to give guidelines to Mumbai Police and address new threats in different areas.'
The objective of Mumbai Cyber Lab is to help provide training to the police personnel, create an interface between the police and people, spread awareness about cyber crime and related issues, as also interact with the corporate, financial institutions and educational institutions through discussion forums, workshops etc. on cyber safety, cyber crime and cyber laws.
Some of the initiatives planned this year besides the CSW are to organize more than 50 workshops, e-security clubs and cyber safety training for police personnel.
During the safety week, Nasscom and Mumbai Police will reach out to different segments of the society - industry, educational institutes and professionals - to draw their attention on e-security. A series of seminars will be held for various financial and banking institutes, public prosecutors on cyber laws, and CIOs, apart from a seminar on "How to Protect your Child from Pornography on the Net' for parents. CSW will also see the launch of e-security clubs at different colleges of Mumbai.
Karnik added, “The cyber crime scene in India is not as bad in comparison to other countries. And the reason for this is strong and effective cyber law and various educational programs organized on cyber safety. These programs should be organized more often."
On the success of MCL, A N Roy, commissioner of police, Mumbai, said, "The Mumbai Cyber Lab has trained 108 police personnel so far on the basics of cyber crime. All the 83 police stations under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police have been covered and we have ensured that there is at least one officer in each police station who has undergone cyber crime training."
