Maxtor Rethinks Warranty to Stay Competitive

By Clyde Fernandes
Mumbai, Aug 28, 2004

With the warranty factor hotting up the HDD market, Maxtor is set to join the bandwagon by extending the warranty on its entire range of entry-level drives.

According to Maxtor sources, its entry-level hard disk drives, which come with a one-year warranty, will now be available with a three-year warranty. The new warranty will be applicable worldwide including India.

The hard disk drive and storage solutions manufacturer is likely to officially announce the decision by the first week of September.

Maxtor's DiamondMax and MaxLine hard disk drive products are already available with three years' warranty, while its Atlas SCSI drives come with a five-year warranty.

This move is seen, in part, as a response to Seagate's five-year warranty extension announced in July. Incidentally, Western Digital, another hard disk manufacturer, plans to set up an office in India.

Maxtor recently announced that it has started shipping its 300 Gb Diamond Max 10 HDDs, which come with a 16MB buffer. These drives use single-chip Serial ATA technology and are targeted at PC users, system integrators, graphic artists and other multimedia PC users.
Will the 3 year warranty help boost Maxtor sales?

NO. Word is getting out that they are totally unreliable. Do NOT trust Maxtor with files not backed up elsewhere. I have a 40g drive 15 months old which failed. A longer warranty will NOT replace valuable files lost. I should have looked on the I'net at all the complaints before I purchased and trusted Maxtor.

I bhought Maxtor drives from a supplier and apparently they were in storage for enough time that after 6 months of my use I had 2 120 gig drives fail and a 200 gig drive fail. They were out of warrentry so no replacement. I will not buy another Maxtor if this is not changed.

In todays competitive time it has become compulsory to tkae care of customer's interest; so far Mxtor is not been able to establish faith in Indian IT market, keeping in mind the psychological factors of Indian buying behaviour it is essential. Indeed a good step.

I got 4 months out of my 120gig drive and then instead of them replacing it with a brand new one, they send you a reconditioned one. What a bunch of crap!!!! They can extend the warranty for 10 years and send you used equipment that you paid for new.

Have personally (and business purposes) used multiple Maxtor HDD's (including latest SATA version) without any instances of failures in well over 6 years straight. Trusty and reliable, especially taking into account all the Maxtor drives are still in use as of this writing, either as backups or as primary in various environments. Wouldn't hesitate using/recommending them, especially now that they will be going back to the 3-year warranty route on all their drives. The extended warranty should help boost their overall sales, with buyers knowing that there is (once again) recourse if needed, within the 3-year warranty period.

Maxtor = Unreliable, I had got an 80GB Maxtor serial ATA last for roughly 10 month, gave it a second chance, got myself another 80GB Maxtor serial ATA last for roughly 2 month. Next stop won’t be MAXTOR

I believe their new line with the 16MB buffer will help considerably. Upping the Warranty to three is short lived others will follow.

Will the 3 year warranty help boost Maxtor sales? I would say yes. In my experience as a technician, hard drives of any brand are at a good ten to twenty times more likely to wear out or become defective prematurely than any other PC component.

Yes. Because the product and suppport is any away better compared to samsung. The failures are quite less compared to other manufacturers

I have not got Maxtor HDDs in spite of willing to pay premia on them. I think Maxtor is interested in dealing ONLY with OEMs, or so we feel. Our company used only Quantum harddisks for years, and whenever we ship servers, we use Maxtor... but for office and home users, we have looked elsewhere because of 1) delivery issues, 2) warranty, 3) absolute lack of support.
