Indian Printer Market Up 3.5 pc in Q3: Gartner
By
ChannelTimes Staff
Mumbai, Nov 26, 2004
The Indian printer market has seen growth of 3.5 percent in the third quarter of 2004 with the shipment of 349,000 units, research firm Gartner has reported.
The total figure includes dye sublimation, line and serial dot matrix printers, single function inkjet and laser printers.
Jackie Yeung, analyst for hardware and systems, Asia-Pacific, Gartner, said, "The major growth area in the market mainly came from the serial dot matrix printer by 14.7 percent increase over last quarter as a result of printer replacements and increased consumer demands in different segments of the printer market in Q3. The competitive pricing and multiple function capabilities of inkjet MFP encouraged Soho and SMB customers to purchase inkjet MFPs rather than single-function printers."
The page printer shipment declined at 3.2 percent from 70,400 units of shipment in Q2 2004 to 68,200 units in Q3 2004, and contributed to the slight growth of Indian printer market in Q3 2004. The negative growth rate of page printer shipment was caused by the decreased monochrome page printer shipments at 3.5 percent over last quarter, but at 44.8 percent increase year over year. The growth of color page printer shipment was recorded at 6.4 percent increase in unit over last quarter and at 93.9 percent increase year over year.
The single-function inkjet printer market recorded 173,000 units in Q3 by 0.2 percent increase in units over last quarter. The inkjet multifunctional products shipment recorded 57,400 units with a 52.1 percent increased in units over Q2 2004 and a 70.4 percent increase in units over the same period in 2003.
From a market share perspective, HP retained the leading position at 37.4 percent market share by unit. Epson followed HP at 23.7 percent market share by unit. Epson and Canon recorded positive year-over-year growth rates at 30.0 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively.
