Nokia has announced that it would start a manufacturing facility for mobile devices in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The unit would be Nokia’s 10th mobile device production facility globally.

Pekka Ala-Pietil , president, Nokia, said, “Establishing a new factory in India is an important step in the continuous development of our global manufacturing network. We selected Chennai to be the location for the factory thanks to the availability of skilled labor, friendly business environment, support from the state government, good logistics connections and overall cost-efficiency.”

According to the company, mobile penetration in Asia-Pacific is expected to be a major contributor to the global mobile subscriber base, surpassing the 2-billion mark by the end of 2005. Therefore India, which is set at the heart of the region where mobile communications is growing rapidly, was a location of choice for the new production facility by the company.

Nokia anticipates investing an estimated $ 100-150 million in the plant, the construction work of which will start in April 2005. The production is expected to begin in the first half of 2006.

The company foresees ramping up the factory gradually and the work force reaching approximately 2,000 employees when production is full scale.

Nokia maintains sales, marketing, customer care, and research & development sites in India.

Oh curtain is out finally. Really good that Chennai got it and unfortunate that Maharashtra lost it. Some time back (may be 15 to 20 days back also) 3 States namely Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were in Cat race of selling the idea to Nokia to come to their states. Gosip also heard that all the heads of these 3 states became down to earth sales person and finally Tamil Nadu got the order. I am sure people in Tamil Nadu must be celebrating Diwali. If I remember correctly 3 year back also GoTN had expressed their wish in a public forum, that Tamil Nadu must get some one to manufacture Mobile phones so that many employment opportunities will get generated and today they got it.

Its good that nokia is coming here. But i dont feel it is the cat race in which which tamil nadu has won. Prob there are more to mfg facilities in maharashtra than TN. So naturally TN is cost competitive and being a metro chennai has lot of advantages next to mumbai and delhi

Its great that Nokia is setting up factory in India. But I think Nokia should set-up factory not in Tamil Nadu but in Maharashtra. Maharashtra is the only state which can provide best infrastructure facilites. Also Maharashtra is the only industralised state in India, having high-tech facilities and also highly educated people, unlike Tamil Nadu where there is there are corrupt & non-sense leaders like Manishankar Iyer. Even the city of Madras does not have proper water supply. From where the Govt of TN will provide water and electricity to Nokia, the world renowned company??.I think Nokia should set-up, factory in Pune / Aurangabad / Nashik. Tamil Nadu may not be the right for High-tech company like Nokia. Can’t compare Nokia to underdeveloped and rural state like Tamil Nadu.

If you want you can convince by showing your superiority and not by talking about other states. Tamil nadu is the leading state in IT industry. It is the only state in India with surplus electricity. There are virtually no power cuts. Regarding water supply , i dont think it is that serious. Nokia will be employing 2000 people. Do you have that much space in Mumbai to provide housing to allof them?. What you have in Mumbai is only traffic jam , dungeon houses and polluted air. As for nasik i cant think of it as a place to start such a high tech industry. What transportation facilities you have between aurungabad and Mumbai? hardly any..! So Nokia has selected the right place . If you want you can apply for a job.

I want to say that nokia is not able to provide good service to people.I recently buyed a handset 2300 but it started malfunctioning .I went to service at nokia care in banglore and serviced it for 3 times .every time no problem was rectified and when I asked them to replace then they said it would take more than 2 months.

This is not the case with me,there were lots of people facing the same condition.

I didn’t find any contact to inform nokia about this thatswhy I am sending msg on this.
Nokia has become from connecting to disconnecting people.
