Anti-Piracy

__p Corel Corporation, desktop publishing and animation solutions major, has initiated an anti piracy campaign in north India in collaboration with its sole national distributor Triffin Technologies. The drive is soon to be extended to other parts of the country.

p____p Under the anti-piracy campaign, Triffin is shooting software compliance mailers to probable suspects, mainly in the print, publishing and advertising industry, asking them to give the serial number of the software in use. In case the user is not using licensed software he is being asked to buy one or face the penalty.

p____p Rajeev Nagar, software compliance manager, Corel Corporation, said, “Software is an intangible item. But software piracy is prevalent and we are losing over 90 per cent of our business to piracy. In order to prevent acts of piracy, Corel Corporation has decided to take severe action against those who sell and use the Corel range of software products illegally in a personal or professional capacity.”

p____p Under the anti piracy campaign, Corel hopes to aggressively promote the usage of legal software. Corel is also in the process of tying up with various agencies involved in promoting the usage of legal software.

p____p According to Nagar, a pilot project in north India had yielded positive results. He admitted, however, that the complete eradication of piracy was not possible especially in the home segment. So, he said, the SME and enterprise segments would initially be the prime targets for the new campaign.

p____p According to Nagar, resellers have responded very positively to the anti-piracy drive since it helped them gain business.

p____p After North India Corel will focus on Mumbai, since they believe the city is a hub of Corel users.
